Satin Affair

LP (Item 393018) Capitol, 1961 — Condition: Very Good+
An early 60s LPs by George Shearing with him at his most outwardly romantic, and you might add cinematic to that. Shearing's ultra-melodic touch on the keys gets paired here with sweeping string arrangements by him and Billy May on a nice set of standards. Tracks include "Early Autumn", "You Were Never Lovlier", "Baubles, Bangles and Beads", "It's Not You", "The Party's Over", "My Romance", "I Like To Recognize The Tune" and "Midnight Sun".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Continental Experience
MPS, 1975. Very Good+
A very groovy record – one of two that George cut for MPS with his "Amigos" group – essentially a Latin Percussion ensemble added to his core quintet with Sigi Schwab on guitar, Rusty Jones on drums, Andy Simpkins on bass, and Heribert Thusek on vibes. The added congas and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shearing Bossa Nova
Capitol, 1962. Very Good
A heavenly album, and easily one of our favorite George Shearing records of the 60s – thanks to some sweet bossa arrangements by a young Clare Fischer! Kenton In Hi-Fi

Easily the most successful album that Stan Kenton ever recorded – a brilliant reworking of older Kenton band standards, done with the dynamics of the 50s hi fi scene! Duke Ellington

Ellington 55
Capitol, 1955. Very Good+
One of Duke's most popular albums of the 50s – but we won't hold that against him! The session's one of a number of 50s outings that revisit older classics with the new level of quality offered in the studio – and it's got a similar feel to some of Duke's work for Bethlehem around the ... Howard Roberts

Color Him Funky
Capitol, 1963. Very Good
Sweet soul jazz from Howard Roberts! The record's one of Roberts' great early efforts for Capitol – recorded with a tight soul jazz group that includes Paul Bryant on organ, Chuck Berghofer on bass, and Earl Palmer on drums. As usual with Roberts, the interplay between guitar and organ is ... LP, Vinyl record album
