Newest Sound Around

LP (Item 38820) RCA, 1961 — Condition: Very Good
An eerie album of modern jazz vocals – featuring the haunting voice of Jeanne Lee with the dark piano of Ran Blake. Most tracks feature only the two of them in duet – but a few feature Lee solo, and a few others have George Duvivier backing the pair up on bass. We like this stuff a lot better than much of Lee's later work – as it's still very much in a traditional jazz vocal realm, just pushed off-kilter a few notches or two, and painted with more abstract colors than usual. Lee's voice is nicely restrained, and has a dark Abbey Lincoln quality to it at the best moments. Titles include "Church On Russel Street", "Laura", "Love Isn't Everything", "Lover Man", "Season In The Sun", and "When Sunny Gets Blue".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original mono pressing, with deep groove. Cover has a bit of wear and some seam splitting. Vinyl is nice and clean.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lena Horne

It's Love
RCA, 1955. Near Mint-
One of our favorite early albums from Lena Horne – a wonderful 50s set for RCA, and one that's got some especially jazzy elements! Horne's vocals still have that warm, famous tone – but the charts from Lennie Hayton seem to have a lot more kick than some of his other work – ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA (Germany), 1967. Near Mint-
Nina's not just singing the blues here – she's completely reinventing the sound of the format – by drawing on a long tradition of vocal expression, and infusing it with the hipper, more personally exploratory mode she forged in the 60s! The album's got a subtle brilliance that means ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ames Brothers with Esquivel

Hello Amigos
RCA, 1960. Near Mint-
A very unique outing – a set that mixes the sweet harmonies of The Ames Brothers with wild backings from Esquivel! Most of the tracks are in Spanish, and have Esquivel doing a standard Latin sound, but which also approaches his own solo work in some of the more unusual moments! LP, Vinyl record album

Abbe Lane with Tito Puente

Be Mine Tonight
RCA, 1959. Near Mint-
Classic 50s work from vocalist Abbe Lane – and a record that's made all the better by some great arrangements from Tito Puente! Abbe's getting past the sexy tricks of other records here – and singing in a dusky tone that works perfect with Tito's tight, choppy, and highly percussive ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Wiley

Touch Of The Blues
RCA, 1958. Very Good
Dark and sophisticated vocals from Lee Wiley – cut with a slightly more traditional feel than some of her other albums from the time, partly because the backings are handled by Billy Butterfield! Yet despite a slightly traddish bent, there's also a slightly modern feel too – a nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1955. Near Mint-
Sweet 50s vocals from Teddi King – a set that's arranged with a fuller style than her small combo sessions from the time – but which still shows her to be one of the most distinctive singers of her time! Teddi's got a voice that's much richer than you'd guess from her small frame ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Rushing

You & Me That Used To Be
RCA, 1971. Very Good+
With small combo backing from Zoot Sims and Al Cohn on tenor, plus Budd Johnson on tenor and soprano sax, Ray Nance on cornet, and Dave Frishberg on piano! Titles include "Fine And Mellow", "I Surrender Dear", "Linger Awhile", "My Last Affair", "More ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lena Horne & Michel Legrand

Lena & Michel
RCA, 1975. Near Mint-
A sweetly mellow album of 70s work from Lena – cut in a mode that's as soulful as her sides for the Skye label a few years earlier, and handled by the same producer too! The main difference in the style is the presence of Michel Legrand – working here in a mode that's still got the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Williams

Jump For Joy
RCA, 1963. Very Good+
One of Joe's best records of the 60s! Jump For Joy is a nicely relaxed and swinging studio session – with arrangement by Jimmy Jones and Oliver Nelson, two talents who again bring out the best in Joe – a groovy and soulful sound that's often not captured as easily on record. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Rushing with Buck Clayton

Jazz Odyssey Of James Rushing Esq.
Columbia, 1957. Very Good+
A classic from Jimmy Rushing – recorded at a time when he was really finding a new audience for his vocals! In a style that Columbia was using on a number of sides in the late 50s and early 60s, Jimmy and Buck do a bit of educatin' – and trace a progression of jazz styles from New ...
