Jan Akkerman

LP (Item 387657) Atlantic, 1978 — Condition: Very Good+

A very different album than usual from Jan Akkerman – but in a really nice way! The album's not nearly as guitar-heavy and rock-leaning as some of Jan's other sets from the 70s – and has a bubbling sort of soul-based finish, one that's arranged by Akkerman with some help from Mike Gibbs – and which almost has a funky dancefloor appeal at times! The jazz component of the record is still relatively strong, in a tripped-out funky fusion way – but there's enough of a consistent pulse to the album to really keep things on track nicely! Includes the spacey "Pavane", which has great keyboards from Joachim Kuhn, and the nicely breaking "Streetwalker" – plus the cuts "Angel Watch", "Crackers", "Skydancer", "Floatin", and "Gate To Europe".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a promo stamp, tracklist sticker, and some wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Herbie Mann

Latin Fever
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint-
Herbie Mann's got Latin fever – and it makes for one heck of a great 60s album! The vibe here is more bossa nova than the New York Latin of the time – but that's OK with us, because Mann's flute is perfect in the setting – and really sparkles here on the album's tracks that were ... Atlantic, 1950s/1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
We constantly find ourselves going back and forth: do we dig the Atlantic Trane, the Impulse Trane, or the Prestige Trane sides more? They each represent significant periods in both his and jazz in general's development, and all are so burning in their own way. This nice compilation brings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

10 Years Hence
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A spacious mid 70s set from Yusef Lateef – with some numbers showing his more soaringly spiritual bent – and others hewing towards a more bluesy or loosely funky vein. Tracked live in San Francisco, some numbers were later augmented with overdubbed strings and vocals – there's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Great Paris Concert
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Did Ellington ever record in concert and it not be great? This wonderful double-length set from the 60s is key proof of his genius in an unfettered live setting – recorded in Paris in 1963 with plenty of dark edges! The tracks are short overall, but Duke's really at the head of the group on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Sheriff
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint-
A moody early 60s set by the MJQ for Atlantic. Overall the group rolls and swings in a bit rougher mode than they do on their brighter efforts, but they still hit the sweet spot and swing when the mood fits! The record works best when Milt Jackson's vibes are let loose, as on the playful reading ... LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent double LP set that brings together all of the material from Lennie's classic Atlantic LPs – Lennie Tristano and The New Tristano. The recordings are stellar stuff – of the sort that rewrote the book for modern jazz piano. The first LP has Lennie playing with Lee Konitz on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Waterbed
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
A sweet electric set from the great Herbie Mann – one of his best of the time! Pretty great stuff – and a record that's often hidden amidst the flurry of so-so Herbie Mann albums from the mid 70s – but is well worth seeking out! Leiber Stoller Big Band

Yakety Yak
Atlantic, Early 60s. Very Good
A very unusual little record, cut at the height of fame for the team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller! Truth!
Prestige, 1970. Very Good+
One of Houston Person's first forays into the jazz funk sound that other Prestige Records players were picking up at the time – a sweet little set with some nicely extended tunes!
