❔

The boys are growing up a bit by this point, but the hit sound is still very firmly in place – and served up here in a catchy batch of bass-riffing, synth-drum grooving numbers that were clearly having a bigger impact upon mainstream soul than anyone might have expected! And after so many years, we've got to admit that the vocals sound a lot better than we remember – harmonizing nicely on the hooks, and coming off with a sweet quality overall. Arrangements are by John Duarte, Rick Timas, Michael Sembello, and Vincent Brantley – and titles include "A Little Bit Of Love", "Sweet Thing", "With You All The Way", "Let's Be Friends", "Whispers In Bed", "School", "All For Love", "Kickback", and "Tonight's Your Night".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lenny Williams

Love Current
MCA, 1979. Sealed
Lenny's working here with Frank E Wilson – a great producer who really understood his style of singing, and who classed up his act considerably after the early days in Tower of Power. The album's got a good mix of smooth soul and uptempo numbers – and tracks include "Sweet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Alicia Myers

Alicia
MCA, 1981. Very Good
Massive work from Alicia Myers – a set that's right up there with her One Way recordings, but with some deeper, more personal touches as well! Production is by Kevin McCord and Al Perkins from the One Way camp – and they bring in a nice mix of the funkier numbers that group was known ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dream Express

Dream Express
MCA/Carousel, 1979. Very Good
Dream Express have some pretty freaky hair on the cover – almost clownish costumes that seem to fit the good natured feel of this disco session from the late 70s! The project's helmed by Wes Farrell & Al DeLory – and even though Dream Express are pictured on the back, and listed ... LP, Vinyl record album

Alicia Myers

Alicia Again
MCA, 1981. Near Mint-
One of the nicest solo records by Alicia Myers – formerly a vocalist with Al Hudson and The Soul Partners, but sounding even better here on her own. The record's got a strong smooth midtempo groove – with the beat toned down a bit from earlier days, in a style that works perfectly for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelma Houston

Qualifying Heat
MCA, 1984. Near Mint-
Although Thelma's best known for her grooves from earlier years, she still sounds plenty darn great on this sweet set from the mid 80s – a bouncy, buoyant batch of tunes that updates the rhythms a bit, but still serves up plenty of her classic-styled vocals! Backings are heavy on beats and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Summers & Summer's Heat

London Style
MCA, 1983. Near Mint-
Bill Summers' London Style here is one that's definitely influenced by the changes on the dancefloor coming from the UK in the early 80s – and the groove is a slightly more electrified take on the rhythms that Bill was laying down on previous albums for MCA! Overall, though, the sound's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Womack

Last Soul Man
MCA, 1987. Very Good+
The legendary Bobby Womack embraces 80s grooves fully on Last Soul Man – his gritty vocals bringing real, gritty soul to backdrops centered by keyboards, synth and programmed beats – and live instrumentation from some exceptional players. Womack brings more depth to the proceedings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donna Summer

I Remember Yesterday
Casablanca, 1977. Sealed
Sweet grooves from Donna Summer – who was still a rising star at this point in the 70s! The title is an honest one – for an album with songs that look back at 60s and earlier 70s soul songcraft – and even earlier than that – mostly via the groovy backup vocals. So, Ms. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

Hot Buttered Soul
Enterprise, 1969. Very Good+
Amazing stuff from Isaac Hayes! Although Ike had first appeared on LP with the album "Introducing", this was the first record to really expose his true soul genius – and it was also the first release on Ike's successful sub-label at Stax, Enterprise Records. The record shows that ... LP, Vinyl record album
