Shout!

LP (Item 385641) Roadshow/Columbia, 1977 — Condition: Very Good
An overlooked gem from BT Express – the group's 5th album, but still very much in the tightly-crafted ensemble mode of earlier years! The guitar and bass interplay on the set is amazing – handled by arranger/guitarist Billy Nichols, with a chromatic edge that really brings a lot of soul to the set! Nichols' work on the album is amazing – honed to an almost Miami funk-like sharpness – and touched by slight bits of moog that really give the set a sinister sort of quality! Lots of lean and mean groovers on the set – including "Shout It Out", "Shake It Off", "You Got Something", "Ride On BT", "Look At The People", "I Want You With Me", "Put It In The Pocket", and "What You Do In The Dark".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

The monumental debut of BT Express – and an excellent funk album that often gets overlooked by fans of the music because of the band's bigger fame as a disco group! Earth Wind & Fire

Powerlight
Columbia, 1983. Very Good+
The Powerlight is burning bright – Maurice White, Philip Bailey, and the rest of the group still very much in classic formation! Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
A stone classic from The Manhattans – still going strong long into the 70s with a classic harmony approach! Tyrone Davis

I Can't Go On This Way
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
A late 70s gem from Tyrone's years on Columbia Records – one that shows both sides of his talents for the label! The set starts out with an extended clubby groover called "Get On Up (Disco)" – a bumping sort of number that's clearly trying to push him into Johnnie Taylor ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Withers

Menagerie
Columbia, 1977. Very Good
One of Bill Withers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that has hip stepping off the acoustic sound of his Sussex records, into a warm and jazzy style that we like every bit as much as his earlier work! The album's got a wonderfully sophisticated jazzy vibe, and includes the excellent cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Soul Sister
Columbia, 1966. Very Good+
Aretha Franklin's definitely growing into her role as a soul sister here – a later date for Columbia Records that hints a bit at the sounds to come on Atlantic! Backings are by Robert Mersey and Belford Hendricks – both of whom use some relatively full orchestrations and occasional ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Despite the title, this isn't really Aretha's greatest hits – as it includes no numbers from the Atlantic years – but it is a pretty good selection of Aretha's earlier work for Columbia, and features some real gems that should have been bigger hits than they were. Manhattans

After Midnight
Columbia, 1980. Near Mint-
Stellar Manhattans from the start of the 80s – and proof that the group could still hold strong, even at a point when soul music was really changing up around them! Cameo

Secret Omen
Chocolate City, 1979. Very Good+
A sweet stunner from Cameo – a set that's got the group working with an even tighter, more on the money sound than before – yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial!
