Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section

LP (Item 3823) Contemporary, 1957 — Condition: Near Mint-
A legendary album from alto genius Art Pepper – a set in which he meets up with the famous Miles Davis rhythm section of the time – Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a trio of players who really help send the album over the top! There's maybe a bit more of a crackle in the rhythms here than on some of Art's other 50s records – which makes for a classic meeting of east and west coast scenes, and some especially nice raspy lines from Pepper – delivered at that level that always made his music of this period so nicely complex – outwardly cool, but with some seething energy at the core. Titles include a definitive take on Art's classic "Straight Life" – plus "Waltz Me Blues", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", and "Star Eyes".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mid 70s Japanese pressing – LAX 3011 – with obi and insert.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A lesser-known set by Art Pepper from his late 70s years – recorded among a quartet of "friends" who include Russ Freeman on piano, Bob Magnussen on bass, and Frank Butler on drums! Barney Kessel

Let's Cook!
Contemporary, 1957. Very Good
Well, if you've ever heard Barney play guitar, you know that he doesn't always cook – or at least not as hotly as other players – but this album is a nice batch of tracks that goes way beyond Kessel's usual uptight sound. Most of the cuts are very long, and they feature open-ended jam ... LP, Vinyl record album

Teddy Edwards

Heart & Soul
Contemporary, 1962. Good
One of our favorite albums by Teddy Edwards – and one with some organ in the group! This obscure quartet side has Gerry Wiggins playing a rare bit of Hammond – grooving the group with a lean and open-ended soul jazz approach that really has Edwards blowing at his best! The style sits ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cecil Taylor

Looking Ahead!
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+
Cecil Taylor's definitely Looking Ahead here – pushing jazz piano very strongly into the 60s with his modernist tones – yet still working with a bit more restraint than in the next decade! Andre Previn/Shelly Manne/Red Mitchell

West Side Story
Contemporary, 1959. Near Mint-
A nicely lean take on the music of West Side Story – done during part of a big late 50s wave of jazz-meets-Broadway albums – and served up by a group who often approached the material better than most! Sonny Rollins

Way Out West
Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint-
A classic set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne!
