Best Of Thelonious Monk

LP (Item 381216) Riverside, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
As the title implies, some of Monk's finest sides for Riverside, collected when the label was under the umbrella of ABC records. The record's a nice, if brief overview of Monk's pre-Columbia years, one of his most fertile and groundbreaking periods. 6 numbers in all, with a quartet reading of "Blue Monk" featuring Johnny Griffin, Ahmed Abdul Malik and Roy Haynes, the larger orchestral recording of "Monk's Mood", a solo rendition of "Body & Soul" and live takes of "Straight, No Chaser", "Nutty" and "Just A Gigolo".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout hole.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A great collection of Thelonious Monk's early pre-LP recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene! Blues Up & Down (second cover)
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
Lockjaw and Johnny Griffin cut a pile of excellent albums together during the early 60s, but this one's one of our favorites! Mulligan Meets Monk
Riverside, 1957. Near Mint-
An unlikely pair, but a great one here – and the record's one of those few magical moments where bringing together unusual partners actually works!
