Aretha Franklin's Greatest Hits

LP (Item 38048) Columbia, Mid 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Despite the title, this isn't really Aretha's greatest hits – as it includes no numbers from the Atlantic years – but it is a pretty good selection of Aretha's earlier work for Columbia, and features some real gems that should have been bigger hits than they were. Titles include "Runnin Out Of Fools", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Sweet Bitter Love", "Today I Sing The Blues", "Without The One You Love", and the sweet sample cut "One Step Ahead".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Columbia Limited Edition pressing. Cover has light wear and the back paste-on has some creases from application.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Get It Right
Arista, 1983. Near Mint-
A real standout from Aretha Franklin's years on Arista – a set produced by Luther Vandross, with a soaring groove that really opens Aretha up nicely! Soul Sister
Columbia, 1966. Very Good+

Live At Fillmore West
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold

Pretty great stuff by Aretha – despite what the pro-Atlantic Records books say! The record is one of the first she cut with John Hammond at Columbia, and although it's not in the classic soul mode of the Atlantic sessions, it's a darn nice batch of bluesy jazz tracks that would still stand ... Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+
A great little record from Aretha – and on that always seems to get overlooked! Includes the nice groover "Mr DJ (5 For The DJ)", plus the cuts ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1965. Very Good+
A hip little live date from Aretha Franklin – one that's got a very jazzy feel, and some great small combo backings! Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Earth Wind & Fire

Powerlight
Columbia, 1983. Very Good+
The Powerlight is burning bright – Maurice White, Philip Bailey, and the rest of the group still very much in classic formation! A stone classic from The Manhattans – still going strong long into the 70s with a classic harmony approach!
