Three Sounds (Blue Note 1600)

LP (Item 37814) Blue Note, 1958 — Condition: Very Good+
Originally: 44.99
Great early work by the Three Sounds, before they'd lapsed a bit too much into their formulaic trio style on Blue Note – and when they were adding some excellent little flourishes to the music to distinguish themselves from the rest of the crowd. Drummer Bill Dowdy's in great shape here, working his way across the kit with the ferocity of a bossa drummer – adding in lots of great fills that bring out the best in Gene Harris sharp piano work. Plus, the album even features a bit of Harris on the celeste – creating a cool vibes-y sound on the track "Blue Bells". Other titles include "O Sole Mio", "Goin Home", "It's Nice", and "Both Sides".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Japanese EMI pressing, with insert – BLP 1600 – a nice clean copy.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Three Sounds

Hey There
Blue Note, 1961. Very Good
Wonderful work from the Three Sounds – a tight little combo who weren't out to break any rules in jazz, but who made some excellent albums for Blue Note in the early 60s! The groove here is hard-edge soul jazz piano at its best – similar to early Les McCann work of the same vintage, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three Sounds

Here We Come
Blue Note, 1960. Near Mint-
The Three Sounds pull away from the curb in a sweet sports car – a great cover image that really sets the tone for the entire record! Three Sounds

Bottoms Up!
Blue Note, 1959. Near Mint-
The bottom is certainly "up" on this one – as the Three Sounds groove things from the ground up, taking soul jazz piano to the next level with an approach that quickly made them one of the most popular Blue Note acts of the early 60s! Gene Harris leads the group on piano – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three Sounds

Blue Genes
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold
A rare non-Blue Note session from The Three Sounds – recorded in the early 60s for Verve, and really the group's only straight album for that label! The style here is similar to the Blue Note sides – with Gene Harris firmly at the helm of the group on piano – hitting that fluidly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three Sounds

Some Like It Modern
Mercury, 1959. Very Good+
Well, the Three Sounds have always been more soulful than modern – and about the only thing "modern" about this pre-Blue Note release is the abstract painting on the cover! But that doesn't stop the record from being a great little batch of soul jazz piano tunes, played by Gene ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Night Of The Cookers Vol 1
Blue Note, 1965. Very Good+

Jimmy Smith

Bucket
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good
Jimmy Smith serves up a bucket of soul here – on an album that's one of his last for Blue Note, and still very much in the strong trio mode that launched his work for the label! The group's that super-sharp early 60s combo of Jimmy's – with Quentin Warren on guitar and Donald Bailey on ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Blue Train
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note (Japan), 1956. Near Mint- 2LP
One of the few American albums by Jutta Hipp – a key figure in the German jazz scene of the postwar years, recording here at the Hickory House in New York! The album's a trio date, but it's got more than enough modern energy to warrant inclusion in the Blue Note 1500 series of the 50s – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black Byrd
Blue Note, 1973. Very Good+
A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went on to forever change the face of jazz funk! Jackie McLean

Jackie's Bag
Blue Note, 1959/1960. Very Good+
A real classic by Jackie McLean – a record that's pulled from 2 different sessions, but which stands out with a strikingly unified feel! The album was cut during the height of Jackie's bop years for Blue Note – with one 1959 session that featured Donald Byrd and Sonny Clark, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
