Lou Rawls Live (Philadelphia International)

LP (Item 377097) Philadelphia International, 1978 — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold

Just in case you were fearing that Lou's late 70s talents were only part of the studio magic of Gamble & Huff, this set proves that Mr Rawls could really sparkle in a spontaneous live setting – working here with a totally top-shelf set of arrangements that display a really wide range of his talents. Lou's a consummate entertainer throughout, and slips into some great patter that recalls some of the best bits on his Capitol albums – working the audience with charm and wit, then slipping into a tune without missing a beat. Titles include "This One's For You", "Groovy People", "Lady Love", "Charge Card Blues Medley", "Stay Awhile With Me", "A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening", "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine", and "When You Say Budwiser, You've Said It All" – Lou's version of the famous 70s commercial, dedicated to his sponsor!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a stuck gatefold and a cutout hole.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1966. Very Good+
One of the greatest albums to ever sum up the genius of Lou Rawls in the 60s – a brilliant live set put together with the talents of David Axelrod! The record perfectly captures the easy-going soul of Rawls in the early years – a natural approach to his music that made him one of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Rawls

Unmistakably Lou
Philadelphia International, 1977. Near Mint-
One of the greatest records ever by Lou Rawls – if only for one cut! That's the amazing "See You When I Get There", which starts with a Fender Rhodes riff over a hard thumping beat – while Lou does this little monologue about calling his woman at home. Then strings sweep in, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1977. Very Good- Gatefold
Nice Philly work by the O'Jays – one of their key "second period" albums, and a lost little gem filled with great harmony soul tracks. The political agenda of early 70s Philly albums is mostly gone, and the group's returned to themes of love and romance – often done in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1982. Very Good-
Although they didn't have as big of chart success as in earlier years, the O'Jays managed to do alright as the 80s moved in on them. Their sweet vocal style was a perfect match for Philly International's move to more modern soul production, and this album has them nicely set up by McFadden & ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great sense of righteousness and groove – the key mix that made the O'Jays so great back in the day – and which really helped put the Philly International enterprise on the map! The album's miles from the group's simple harmony soul roots – even though those were pretty darn ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Paul

Let 'Em In
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good-
Probably not Paul's strongest record, but you can't deny his voice sounds great and we're never ones to argue with Gamble & Huff production. Recorded at Sigma Sound and features arrangements and productions by Dexter Wansel alongside Jack Faith and Gamble & Huff, this album still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Philadelphia International, 1986. Near Mint-
A great little set from this solo member of the Jones Girls – and one of the strongest new sets on Philly International in the 80s! Philadelphia International, 1970. Near Mint-
Fantastic early O'Jays! The album's the first to feature the group meeting up with the Gamble/Huff team – a significant shift from their earlier work on Imperial, with a style that still retains all the vocal hardness of those days, but which makes a shift into a sweeter soaring soul groove! ... As perfect a summation of the Teddy Pendergrass genius as you'll ever hope to find – a magnificent maturation of that incredible sound he first forged with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, set forth in even more confident, sophisticated soul territory! Best Love
Philadelphia International, 1979. Sealed
A great album follows up the sound of the Jerry's first for Philly International – a smooth mellow style that grooves in an all-adult mode that's a perfect setting for the aging Iceman's vocals! The Butler voice is always a wonderful treat, but cast amidst the warm and sophisticated ... LP, Vinyl record album
