Love & All That Jazz

LP (Item 3769) Prestige, 1966 — Condition: Very Good

Great early Eric Kloss record, with a tight organ jazz feel, courtesy of Groove Holmes and Don Patterson. Kloss was totally tight at this point, and less given to the sort of sloppy experimentation that weakened him later. He's backed by two great tight organ jazz groups, and the feel is nice and loungey, but with a good modern edge. Tracks include "Gemini", "Just for Fun-k", and a great version of "Love for Sale". Nice cover too.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue trident label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has a cutout hole.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eric Kloss

Sky Shadows
Prestige, 1968. Sealed
One of the late 60s killers for Prestige by reedman Eric Kloss – sublime material that was every bit as great as some of the bigger-name work for the label, but never really got its due! Kloss is sharper and more focused here than in later years – starting with a hardbop groove, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Wallington

Jazz For The Carriage Trade
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint-
Sublime work from pianist George Wallington – and one of his best albums ever! The set's also one of the few he ever recorded as a leader outside the trio format, and has him working with a very hip quintet that features Phil Woods, Donald Byrd, Teddy Kotick, and Art Taylor – all ... Gene Ammons, Etta Jones, & Jack McDuff

Soul Summit Vol 2
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
A set that's less a "summit" than a great collection of groovy work for Prestige Records in the 60s – tracks that didn't make it onto other full albums of the time, but which feature material by some of the most soulful talents on the label! Tenorist Gene Ammons is the main star ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon

Tangerine
Prestige, 1972. Near Mint-
A great American set from Dexter Gordon – recorded at a time when most of his bigger records were coming from overseas! The set's got some nice long tracks that really let Gordon open up on tenor – on those well-blown, longform solo modes he was really cracking in the European scene ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of those 70s two-fers where Prestige went back and decided dicing up all those sessions in the 50s and 60s didn't make as much sense as issuing them as the way they went down. As such, this set collects work from one long blowing session, which eventually saw the light of day as two separate ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ronnie Mathews

Doin' The Thang!
Prestige, 1964. Very Good-
One of the only early albums as a leader from pianist Ronnie Mathews – a player who recorded more often in later years, but who really sounds incredible in this rare session for Prestige! Although a lyrical player at heart, Mathews also has a very hard edge here – more of a soul jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuff

Hot Barbeque
Prestige, 1966. Very Good-
One of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff – not just for the cover (which is plenty appealing to us as BBQ fans!), but also for the tight, sharply focused grooves on the set – some of Jack's first really firey work on record! The combo here is great – with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Woofin & Tweetin
Prestige, Early 50s. Very Good
A classic album from Gene Ammons – one that features the tenor legend at his prime, working in two different settings! The first batch has Ammons "battling" Sonny Stitt in a set of stuff that features hard twin tenors in the frontline, with the kind of cutting contests the two of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Prestige reissued this record in 1975 and it includes the whole of Saxophone Colossus as well as parts of Sonny Boy, Sonny Rollins Plays For Bird and Sonny Rollins Plus Four all from 1956. Sonny Stitt with Booker Ervin & Don Patterson

Soul People
Prestige, 1965. Very Good+
Twin-saxophone magic from the team of Sonny Stitt and Booker Ervin – playing together here on some great long tracks that get plenty of support from Don Patterson on the Hammond! The set's got a very open, very jamming sort of quality – with Book on tenor, and Stitt on both tenor and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Blue Haze
Prestige, 1954. Very Good
An early full-length album issued under Miles Davis' name – one that brings together some earlier 10" and single recordings for Prestige! The feel here is quite similar to Davis' work of the time for Blue Note – done with tracks that are short and tight, and very boppish – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Claude Bolling

French Jazz
Bally, 1956. Near Mint-
An early batch of tracks from French arranger Claude Bolling – probably best known for his later "jazz meets classical" work, but heard here in a great straight set from the 50s! The album features Bolling at the head of a largeish group that features Parisian players Roger Guerin, ... LP, Vinyl record album
