Love & All That Jazz

LP (Item 3769) Prestige, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+
Wonderful early work from reedman Eric Kloss – looking mighty sharp on the cover, but in a different way than on his 70s albums! The sound here is right in the same pocket as work by some of the best soul jazz artists on Prestige at the time – no surprise, as the set features Hammond work from either the group of Don Patterson, with Vinni Corrao on guitar and Billy James on drums – or Richard Groove Holmes, who works with Gene Edwards on guitar and Grady Tate on drums! Tracks all have a nice groove, with Kloss on tenor and alto – and titles include "No Blues", "Gemini", "Just for Fun-k", and a great version of "Love for Sale".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo blue label pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has light wear, small center split on the bottom seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, 1958. Very Good 2LP Gatefold

Eddie Lockjaw Davis

Smokin'
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
The title's certainly right – as the set's a smoker of a record from the mighty Eddie Lockjaw Davis – really hitting his best groove here, and opening up on tunes that are even stronger than his classic Cookbook material! The group includes Shirley Scott on Hammond, and Jerome ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Evans

Big Stuff!
Prestige, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Fantastic early work from Gil Evans – emerging here in this early session as an already far-thinking modernist. The tracks are shorter and less ambitious than some of Evans' work on Impulse, but the group is excellent – and even in a shorter format, the conception of the work still ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
An excellent overview of Ammons' early years at Prestige – back when he was recording mostly 78s for the label, and king of the jukebox scene! Thelonious Monk

Underground
Columbia, 1968. Near Mint-
One of the most gimmicky cover images ever used to sell the music of Thelonious Monk (and Monk himself hated the image) – but a key classic from his legendary years at Columbia Records! The album's got an edge that definitely lives up to its title – even if the cover photo is a bad ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Horace-Scope
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good+
Early 60s magic from Horace Silver – working here at the height of his youthful powers! The album's a perfect example of the sound that Silver created while at Blue Note – a lyrically melodic approach to soul jazz, but one that was able to open up the rhythms past stock riffs and ... Sonny Stitt

Now!
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A tight swinger from Sonny Stitt – one of the standout 60s dates he recorded for the Impulse label, a place where he seemed to get even more care and focus in the studio! The record's got all the soulful swing of Stitt's classics for Roost, but also hits a slightly more lyrical groove at ... LP, Vinyl record album
