High Rise

LP (Item 376176) Capitol, 1983 — Condition: Very Good+

Always-great work from the team of Ashford & Simpson – the kind of a record that has them at the top of their game, even though they'd changed their overall sound over the years! The vibe here is more in an 80s groove mode than some of the duo's Warner albums, but they've still got an undeniable talent for a massive hook – the kind that makes even the simplest tunes really go over the top. Plus, they're just about one of the only male/female duo teams that you can hear on record and actually believe that both singers are on the same page! Titles include "Side Effect", "Experience", "It's A Rush", "High-Rise", "Still Such A Thing", "It's Much Deeper", "I'm Not That Tough", and "My Kinda Pick Me Up".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes printed inner sleeve.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Warner, 1978. Sealed
Ashford & Simpson don't need to ask at this point – their in full 70s soul stride here, and it's not good, it's great! Jimmy G & The Tackheads

Federation Of The Tackheads
Capitol, 1985. Very Good+
An obscure early 80s electro effort from George Clinton – all the more surprising, given how much he pretended to hate hip hop! At some level, Jimmy G & The Tackheads are mostly an 80s groove outfit – using lots of bass and keys to pop and lock the groove, while throwing in plenty ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of two classic live albums that Maze cut during the 80s – even more proof that the Maze style of soul music was not only thriving, but succeeding strongly outside the studio, and regardless of airplay and album sales! Lou Rawls

Carryin' On!
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint-
One of Lou's excellent Capitol sessions produced by David Axelrod! The record's not an outwardly funky one, but Axe gives the set a nice loping groove on the best tracks – the sound that he brought to his best work with Rawls, and which really put him over the top back in the 60s. Lou Rawls with Les McCann Ltd

Stormy Monday
Capitol, 1962. Very Good
One of Lou's most jazz-oriented albums – featuring backing by Les McCann's famous trio with Leroy Vinnegar and Ron Jefferson, perfectly suited to Lou's soulful renditions of the tunes on the album. Most of the numbers are bluesy ones, but as usual, Lou manages to give them his own hip twist ... LP, Vinyl record album
