Moody's Mood (Moody's Mood For Love/Flute N The Blues/Last Train From Overbrook)

LP (Item 374532) Argo/Chess, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold

A nice little collection of James Moody's excellent work for the Argo label from the early 60s – featuring tunes that originally appeared on the albums Moody's Mood For Love, Flute N The Blues, and Last Train From Overbrook! The overstuffed set actually seems to include almost all the tracks from the records – a total of 26 tracks that show Moody as an incredibly inventive player at the time, really moving past bop into a realm of exotic soul jazz and freer-thinking tones and colors! Titles include "Tico Tico", "Yvonne", "Brother Yusef", "There She Goes", "Boo's Tune", "Breaking The Blues", "Birdland Story", "Mean To Me", "Parker's Mood", and "Plus Eight". (Cover has light wear and minor moisture damage along the opening.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sun Journey
Vanguard, 1976. Very Good
Not as funky as Moody's work for Perception, but definitely in a similar mode. The record's got James playing alto, tenor, and soprano – in a group that includes Kenny Barron on electric piano, Roland Prince on guitar, and some guest trumpet by Randy Brecker. The tracks shift from warm and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Milestone, 1966. Very Good
Forget the "brass" in the title, because this is a great set – not hokey at all, not a big band session, but a wonderfully well-developed expression of jazz from the great James Moody – recorded during an extremely fruitful time in his career! About half the tunes on the set ... LP, Vinyl record album
James Moody (1959)
Argo, 1959. Sealed
Great work from Moody's "second phase" – the post-Overbrook time in which he picks up the flute, drops a bit of the bop style, and starts working in a much more complicated style that showed that he had a hell of a lot of room to grow as an artist! This album's Moody's second for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Just Jug
Argo, Early 60s. Very Good-
One of those shady little sessions that Gene Ammons cut for Argo when he wasn't supposed to be recording for anyone but Prestige – and a great album that never got full circulation because of contract difficulties. One of Ahmad Jamal's best early albums for Argo – a brilliant set of live recordings, done at the Spotlite Club in Washington DC in 1958 – and with a fluid vibe that's simply incredible – one of the best true statements of Jamal's genius from the early years! The trio is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Argo, 1957. Very Good-
With a name like Chubby, the set ought to be a snoozer – but it swings nicely, thanks to some strong bass work by Jackson! A nice little album – featuring some of the sides that Gene Ammons cut "off contract" for Chess/Argo during the early 60s, and ones that feature him paired with Sonny Stitt, his longtime partner in legendary tenor battles from the 50s. Argo, 1965. Very Good
Easily one of the biggest selling jazz albums of the 60s – a crowning achievement for Ramsey Lewis and his popular trio with Eldee Young on bass and Redd Holt on drums! The set was recorded live at the Bohemian Caverns in DC, and the trio are perfect in the setting – going at the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chess, Early 50s/1963. Very Good-
A great set – and for more reasons than one! Most of the album features rare early 78s by jazz baritonist Leo Parker – one of the real giants on the instrument, and a player with a hard-wailing tone that makes it sound more like a tenor than a clunky giant-sized horn. Parker's tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Message
Argo, 1963. Very Good
A really hard groover from Illinois Jacquet's later years on Chess – a solidly smoking session that features plenty of organ and guitar! There's a gutbuckety groove here that's a lot like some of Willis Jackson's best work on Prestige at the time – a style that's based around the ... LP, Vinyl record album
