Touch The Sky

LP (Item 374481) Tamla, 1982 — Condition: Sealed

Smooth Smokey at the height of his powers – gliding along in the quiet storm groove that he helped to invent, and still sounding surprisingly down to earth – thanks to an intimate and relaxed feel to the set! Despite the date of the album, the instrumentation is nicely restrained, and still mostly has an organic feel – with lots of sweet electric piano in the lead from co-producer Sonny Burke, and a jazzy studio feel overall – one that never challenges Smokey's vocals for dominance. Titles include "Touch The Sky", "Even Tho", "Gimme What You Want", "Gone Again", "Sad Time", "All My Life's A Lie", "Dynamite", and "I've Made Love To You A Thousand Times".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Smokey Robinson

Yes It's You Lady
Tamla, 1982. Near Mint-
A slightly more-grooving record than some of Smokey's others from the time – done in a style that rolls around in a mostly-midtempo mode. There's almost a gentle 80s groove approach at times, although some of the tunes on the set are definitely in that stone mellow love song style that was ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson

Warm Thoughts
Tamla, 1980. Near Mint-
Warm thoughts, and equally warm vocals – thanks to the legendary Smokey Robinson, who's still sounding great here at the start of the 80s! The record's surprisingly charming – and has the laidback, mellow-going sort of sound that Robinson first crafted on Quiet Storm – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

Super Hits
Tamla, 1960s. Very Good
Kind of an ultimate Marvin Gaye hits compilation – issued in 1970, with one of the most badass Motown covers of the time! The album's got a famous image of Gaye as a black Superman – flying high on the cover of a set that's filled with some of his best 60s work for Motown – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tamla, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Very high concept work from Stevie Wonder! The record is, in fact, about the "secret life of plants" – partially used as a soundtrack for a film of the same name, but also acting as kind of a storybook in itself! Stevie's exploring a wide range of plant life and plant themes on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tamla, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
A fantastic 70s classic from Stevie Wonder – part of a great run of records in which he broke completely from his earlier Motown sound – and showed the world that he was one of the true musical visionaries of the decade! The righteous currents of his previous few albums are fully in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

In Square Circle
Tamla, 1985. Near Mint- Gatefold
Mid 80s, and while never that bad (nothing Stevie does is ever terrible – well, except for "Don't Drive Drunk"!), the record lacks that certain greatness that you'll find on even the lesser Stevie Wonder albums. Titles include "Stranger On The Shore Of Love", "Spiritu ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tamla/Natural Resources, 1961. Very Good+
Amazing early work from Marvin Gaye – a set that's more jazz than soul, with a really unique sort of sound! Marvin's vocals are sublime, but in a completely different way than on his later hits – almost a bit broken at times, next to some very broken-down piano lines used in the album's ... Eddie Kendricks

Goin' Up In Smoke
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+
A soaring set from the great Eddie Kendricks – and a record that brings his Detroit roots into play with the best Philly grooves of the time – thanks to production from the mighty Norman Harris! Harris works with the cream of the crop of the Sigma Sound scene, and cooks up these ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Hotter Than July
Tamla, 1980. Sealed Gatefold
A bit smoother than early days, but still very nice and soulful – and did we expect any less from Stevie? The record's got a nicely flanged-out soul groove – with a style that kind of expands on the vocal and keyboard production of the early 70s, taking the groove towards a sound that ... Eddie Kendricks

Slick
Tamla/Motown, 1977. Very Good+
Smooth mellow grooves, in the style that Eddie pioneered, and which he still did better than most. The album's a great batch of tracks with production by Leonard Caston, who also produced some of Eddie's earlier works, and the set's pretty darn great all the way through. With the cuts "Someth ... Jean Carn

Jean Carn
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good
Jean Carn was one of the best-ever singers to hit the Philly International label – a sophisticated diva with a style that would strongly influence soul music for the next 10 years, and a downright compelling voice that crafted some of the best modern soul of her generation. Although Jean ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tyrone Davis

In The Mood
Columbia, 1979. Very Good
Our favorite album ever from Tyrone Davis – even if it's completely different than most of his other work too! The set's got a wonderfully smooth feel right from the start – a mellow-grooving, slow-stepping approach that works perfectly for Tyrone's wonderful vocals – pushing ... LP, Vinyl record album
