❔

Rick James hits a smoother sort of style here – one that's almost a compressed take on the mainstream version of funk first crafted on his earlier records, fused into a more radio-friendly approach for the Prince generation! The sound's actually not that bad – and the record has an appeal (albeit a dated one) as a relic of crossover soul from a time that's fading more and more from the collective memory. Rick's still writing, arranging, and producing the whole set – and titles include "Glow", "Melody Make Me Dance", "Can't Stop", "Spend The Night With Me", "Somebody", "Moon Child", "Sha La La La La", and "Rock & Roll Control".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rick James

Street Songs
Gordy, 1981. Very Good
One of the all-time great Rick James albums – a return to funkier sounds for Rick that worked both artistically and commercially – and actually got over far better than his more blatant attempts at crossover material on other records! The mix here is perfect – a true summation of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gordy, 1979. Very Good+
Think what you might about Rick James, this is actually a pretty darn funky album – with lots of tight bass-heavy grooves! Rick's working here with the Stone City Band, in a style that's leaner and less commercial than some of his later work – going for a mainstream funk approach, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gordy, 1970. Very Good+
It's later in the Temps' career, when they were cutting much heavier soul material – but Berry's still got them polishing up for the crossover crowd, in this case at London's classy Talk Of The Town nightclub. The group still get in some strong soul tunes – like "Cloud Nine", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dennis Edwards

Coolin' Out
Gordy, 1985. Sealed
A second solo set from Temptation Dennis Edwards – a great set of mellow modern soul, with a very 80s approach to the production and arrangements. There's a bit of 80s production in the mix – handled by Dennis Lambert in a strong way that never overcomes the vocals – and titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Val Young

Seduction
Gordy, 1985. Near Mint-
A lost little gem from the Rick James camp – a bit obscure, despite the fact that Val's a former Bride Of Funkenstein! Val's not as well known as some of the other artists that Rick James worked with back in the 80s – but given her resume, she's got a solidly soulful sound that works ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Masterpiece
Gordy, 1973. Very Good
They certainly got the title right on this one – because the album's an early 70s masterpiece from the Temptations – one of the last in their legendary run of records with Norman Whitfield! By this point, the group are way past simple harmony soul – and are working with Whitfield ... LP, Vinyl record album

Edwin Starr

Hell Up In Harlem
Motown, 1974. Very Good
Despite what you think of Edwin Starr otherwise, he did a great job on this soundtrack, which is every bit as funky as any of Willie Hutch's work for other Motown scores! Larry Mizell and Dennis Coffey help out on the instrumentation – so you know the album's as funky as can be – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mar-Keys

Damifiknow
Stax, Early 70s. Near Mint-
A great bit of Memphis funk from the 70s! The 60s version of The Mar-Keys was more of a rocking instrumental group – but the 70s version has a much harder sound, and a lot more of a tendency to funk things up. This album features them running through instrumental versions of a number of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sire/Mute, 1982. Near Mint-
A seminal bit of pre-electro crossover – featuring the cold hard vocals of Alison Moyet, and some very tasty keyboard work! Includes the post-disco club smashes "Don't Go" and "Situation", plus "Goodbye Seventies", "Winter Kills", "Midnight", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capricorn, 1974. Near Mint-
Post-Atlantic work from Percy Sledge, but a set that's still pretty darn great – produced with a newly sophisticated edge in Muscle Shoals by the legendary Quin Ivy, who really seems bent on helping Sledge break out of earlier styles in his music! That undeniably great Sledge vocal approach ... LP, Vinyl record album
Imperial, Late 50s. Poor
Classi cearly work from Fats Domino – with titles that include "Hey Fat Man", "Detroit City Blues", "New Baby", "Little Bee", "Every Night Around This Time", "Cheatin", "You CanPack Your Suitcase", and the hit "I'm ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modernique

Modernique
Sire, 1987. Near Mint-
A group with a sound that's as modern as their name – a short-lived 80s soul combo with lots of electro funky touches! There's a snapping style to Modernique that makes them feel a bit like The Family, Madhouse, or other members of the Paisley Park universe – but their overall sound is ... LP, Vinyl record album
