Bundle From Britain

LP (Item 372207) Top Rank, 1959 — Condition: Very Good+

The first American performance of UK leader John Dankworth – recorded live at Newport in 1959, with very pleasing results! Dankworth's group was one of the most upbeat, swinging, and hard-driving in England at the time – and they come off here with just the sort of sound that must have gotten them some great acclaim with American audiences. The lineup is quite big, and players include Kenny Wheeler and Bob Carson on trumpet, Tony Russell and Garry Brown on trombone, Johnny Dankworth on alto and clarinet, Danny Moss on tenor, Alex Leslie on baritone, and Dickie Hawdon on trumpet and tenor horn. The live setting seems to open up the group even more than on some of their UK recordings from the period – allowing for longer tracks that have nice room for solo work. Titles include "Firth Of Fourths", "Caribe", "Royal Ascot", "Doggin Around", and "Jones".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has some stuck-on cellophane on front.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Incredible early work from British leader Johnny Dankworth – jazz work that's as fluid and grooving as his best 60s soundtrack sessions, and cut with an early sense of power that's really great! Great US issue of 2 different albums that Webster recorded in Europe near the end of his life – Blow Ben Blow and For The Guv'nor. An unusual session from the heart of Lou Donaldson's return to Blue Note in the late 60s – a mellower date that stands in strong contrast to his funkier albums of the time!
