❔
A 2LP set that brings together earlier Sam Cooke titles for RCA – some remastered and made into stereo titles, others just cleaned up a bit. There's a total of 20 tracks in all – with hits like "Twistin The Night Away", "You Send Me", "Chain Gang", "Having A Party", "Another Saturday Night", and "Cupid" – plus lesser-known numbers like "Feel It", "Little Red Rooster", and "Everybody Loves To Cha Cha Cha".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Black label pressing in a non-gatefold cover, with some edge wear, half split top seam, wide center split in the bottom seam, and a light stain in front.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Try A Little Love
RCA, 1965. Very Good
Released shortly after Sam's death, this is a beautiful batch of ballad tracks to remember how sweet his voice was. The production's a bit pop, but Sam's singing is as heavenly as ever. Titles include "When A Boy Falls In Love", "Try A Little Love", "Bridge Of Tears" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Cooke

Hits Of The 50s
RCA, 1960. Very Good+
A classic set of soulful vocals – one in which Sam Cooke sings hits of the 50s (as you'd guess from the title) – but not necessarily his own hits, more a selection of work by other artists – all given a really unique spin by Sam! And while other soul artists occasionally faltered ... LP, Vinyl record album

Specialty, Late 50s. Very Good+
A nice little compilation that brings together both sides of Sam Cooke's early work – his gospel recordings with the Soul Stirrers, and his secular soul from a few years later. The package is a great overview of Sam's best recordings in both worlds – with one side of gospel, one side of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Five Star

Silk & Steel
RCA, 1986. Very Good
The bright-eyed, good natured pop soul of UK brothers & sisters group Five Star matures nicely on Silk & Steel – a set that's grooving with more grown up vibes than the first one, but still carrying on the sound for the most part. Nice, poppy synth soul and sweet lead and group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Evelyn Champagne King

Smooth Talk (2nd pressing)
RCA, 1977. Very Good+
Wonderfully smooth soul from Evelyn Champagne King – one of her real standouts from the early days, and a tremendous collaboration with producer/arranger T Life! The sound here is upbeat and catchy, but never too poppy – done with a slight hint of that groove that King would hit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Five Star

Luxury Of Life
RCA, 1985. Near Mint-
Nice mid 80s UK pop soul from Five Star – sweet family act that's kind of in the mode that's a bit of an unofficial British answer to the cheery family pop soul vibe of groups like DeBarge and New Edition at the time – and a sweet one! Lean, lightly thumping synth soul backdrops and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Evelyn Champagne King

Face To Face
RCA, 1983. Very Good
Evelyn Champagne King will always be most popularly remembered for her massive disco pop crossover hits of the late 70s, but she progressed really nicely throughout the 80s, keeping up with the evolving dancefloor soul sounds of the times – and Face To Face is a lean, clubby electro soul and ... The beginning of an amazing run on RCA for vocalist Jon Lucien – working here in a sublime blend of styles that's way beyond simple soul or standard jazz! War

Outlaw
RCA, 1982. Very Good
A sweet snapping groove from War – a set that has the group picking up a bit more boogie in their bounce than before, but at a level that helps keep their funk fresh for a whole new generation!
