Aretha Arrives

LP (Item 36668) Atlantic, 1967 — Condition: Very Good+

Aretha Arrives in great style – and a mixture between her earlier vocal jazz years at Columbia, and her later southern soul sides of the 60s! Arif Mardin is already arranging Aretha's work at this point, and the backing group includes southern soul studio giants like Spooner Oldham, Tommy Cogbill, and Roger Hawkins – but there's also a number of tracks that have mellow strings and horns by Ralph Burns, very much in the lush style of Burns' work for other vocalists – and a bit different than some of Franklin's other Atlantic work. The Sweet Inspirations back up Aretha on "Ain't Nobody (Gonna Turn Me Around)", and a few other tracks feature backings by sisters Erma and Carolyn – who are always a welcome addition! Titles include "Prove It", "Never Let Me Go", "I Wonder", "Going Down Slow", and "Night Life".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue & green label pressing. Cover has a cutout notch and a small center split on the top seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Aretha Franklin

Jump To It
Arista, 1982. Very Good+
Aretha's grooving sweetly on a record that's produced by Luther Vandross – and a damn strong one, too! Aretha wasn't the first, or the last classic soul singer to embrace the modern sounds of the early 80s, but relatively few outshined their younger peers as brilliantly as Aretha does here. ... Steve Arrington

Jammin National Anthem
Atlantic, 1986. Sealed
A bit more pop than some of Steve Arrington's earlier work, but proof that Mr Slave could still come up with a groove when he wanted! The record's got a quirky approach that's almost in line with later versions of P-Funk – but Arrington's never as goofy, and mostly lets the gimmicks come out ... LP, Vinyl record album

Trammps

Mixin It Up
Atlantic, 1980. Near Mint-
One of the most dancefloor-oriented efforts from the Trammps – and that's saying a lot, given the sound of their other records! This set brings the beats up a bit more than before – almost a boogie groove, or an 80s-styled sound at points – but still with strong roots in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Hansa, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
A nice bit of space age disco fantasy from Boney M – a set that's got a few more electronic touches than some of the group's other records, but which still continues in a straight ahead poppy vein! There's a sound here that's arguably a bit more sophisticated than before – especially ... LP, Vinyl record album
