Live & Uncensored

LP (Item 36593) Spring, 1979 — Condition: Very Good
2LP Gatefold

Uncensored is right! Millie's live shows during the 70s were a lot raunchier than any of her records – and were usually filled with profanity, off-color jokes, and plenty of frank and foxy references to sex. She'd built her name on record through sweet heartbreaking southern soul sides – but this album gives the at-home listening crowd one of their first tastes of Millie in the raw, and it contains many classic monologues and lots of witty patter that Millie still uses in live shows to this day. Includes a great version of "If Loving You Is Wrong", with a hip rap in the middle; a nice take on "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", with a similar monologue to that used by Latimore in his live sets; a version of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?", the "Phuck U Symphony"; a piece on "The Soaps", and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Millie Jackson

Lovingly Yours
Spring, 1976. Very Good+
A great point in Millie Jackson's career – recorded when she was picking up more confidence and class, but not going too far into that badass mode of later years! The sound here is still mostly southern soul, but Millie and co-producer Brad Shapiro have warmed it up a lot – bringing in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Millie Jackson

Still Caught Up
Spring, 1975. Very Good
A great follow up to Mille Jackson's classic Caught Up album – but one that's also a key turning point too! The theme here is the same as the album before – with tunes that have a woman "caught up" in love and all of its tangles – but the sound is also bolder, more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Simon

Sounds Of Simon
Spring, Early 70s. Very Good
Classic Joe Simon – smooth, soulful, and with slight bits of down-home country in the mix. John Richbourg produced the album, which was recorded at Music City in Nashville – a key example of the strength of that city's contribution to the ever-expanding sound of southern soul in the ... Warner, 1978. Very Good- Gatefold
What can we say? Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth, sly, slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years and in later ... Chic

C'est Chic
Atantic, 1978. Near Mint-
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout! Riffing Nile Rodgers guitars really make the tunes cook – as does the superb production – and although the record played plenty in discos and radios of the mainstream ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Aretha Now
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint-
One of a handful of crucial early Aretha Franklin albums for Atlantic – and a key example of her genius pairing with arranger Arif Mardin! Instrumental backing is by a hard burning Memphis/Muscle Shoals lineup that includes Spooner Oldham on electric piano and organ, Tommy Cogbill on guitar, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Five Special

Special Edition
Elektra, 1980. Near Mint-
Classic funky soul from Five Special – tightly crafted throughout, and clearly with an eye on the charts – but also the kind of work that plays nicely on the dancefloor too! The record's got a groove that fits in nicely with some of the lesser-remembered groovers on Elektra at the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Henderson

Solid
Buddah, 1976. Near Mint-
The very first album from Michael Henderson – but a set that already finds him very much at the top of his game – thanks to previous work with Miles Davis and Norman Connors! Both artists gave Henderson a chance to do different things with his music, and by the time of this record, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur
Warner, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
A landmark record from Maria Muldaur – quite different than the rougher folsky work she cut in the 60s – and done with a really warm studio sound that's pure 70s all the way through! Maria's working here with some older folksy contemporaries – like David Grisman, Ry Cooder, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Destination

From Beginning To End
Butterfly, 1979. Near Mint-
Full on orchestral disco from Destination – a group who only cut this one LP, but who work with a sound that's totally solid instrumentally! The tracks mix some fast-riffing percussion with fuller orchestrations – creating at two-tiered groove that's a lot more compelling than you ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tamla, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A fantastic 70s classic from Stevie Wonder – part of a great run of records in which he broke completely from his earlier Motown sound – and showed the world that he was one of the true musical visionaries of the decade! The righteous currents of his previous few albums are fully in ... LP, Vinyl record album
