Piano A La Mode

LP (Item 365007) Jubilee, Late 50s — Condition: Very Good+

One of the most obscure Randy Weston albums of the 50s – and one of the most striking, too! The title and cover are a bit unassuming, but Weston's in his prime modern mode throughout – working both through his own compositions, and on some amazing remakes of older standards – all with understated brilliance, in the company of bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Connie Kay. The original tunes have that jagged edge and spiraling sense of line that Weston was bringing to jazz at the period – and those tunes are offset by a surprising sense of lyricism on some of the standards. Titles include "Earth Birth", "Saucer Eyes", "I Got Rhythm", "Gingerbread", "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen", "Cocktails For Two", "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Fe-Double-U Blues".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Randy Weston

Blue Moses
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Beautiful work from Randy Weston – and a unique electric session from the 70s! The feel is very different here than the angular modernism of Randy's roots – a warmer, more flowing sound – as you'd expect from the CTI label, and from Randy's use of electric piano as well as ... Moe Koffman

Cool & Hot Sax
Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good+
An early effort from saxman Moe Koffman – a much straighter jazz record than some of his later funk, flute, and cosmic groove experiments – and a nice one at that! The album features Koffman mostly on tenor, leading a septet of Canadian players in a set of tightly arranged titles that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jubilee, 1959. Very Good
An album that's way better than you might expect – not the easy cash-in on the film Some Like It Hot that's telegraphed by the cover – but instead a tight trad jazz date by trombonist Lou McGarity – done in some of the same mature modes as Jack Teagarden's work from the same time! ... Eddie Costa/Vinnie Burke

Eddie Costa/Vinnie Burke Trio
Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good+
A spare and sweet little set from the team of Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke – one of the best of the east coast chamber jazz groups of the mid 50s! The pair's trio has Eddie on piano and vibes, Vinnie on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – all working together to craft light, rhythmic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Very Good
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Henderson

Inside Out
Capricorn, 1974. Very Good+
A great post-Miles/post-Herbie space funk jam – produced by Skip Drinkwater before he got into his later, more well-known slick Jazz-funk style. Chico O'Farrill

Nine Flags
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very groovy work from Chico – still very Latin at the core, but with lots of light 60s touches on top, ala the work of Gary McFarland, or some of the other groove-conscious arrangers for Verve and Impulse! Players on the set include Art Farmer, Clark Terry, JJ Johnson, Seldon Powell, and Pat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wynder K Frog

Out Of The Frying Pan
United Artists, 1969. Sealed
A lost Hammond classic – from organist Mick Weaver, who famously worked with the group Traffic! This set's a lot different than the work he did in that band, though – as the album's all instrumental, and has a quick-stepping, all-soul sound that's a lot like the best Jimmy McGriff ... Miles Davis

Water Babies
Columbia, 1967. Near Mint-
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Bridge
RCA, 1962. Near Mint-
A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Given Hall's gentleness and spare modernity on the guitar, a fan of Rollins' hard-blowin ... LP, Vinyl record album
Danola, 1976/1991. Near Mint-
