Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

4.90 11

Mellow work cut by Aretha at Columbia in the early and mid 60s, and repackaged in this release by the budget arm of the label. The tracks are mostly standards and pop tunes – done by Aretha in a sophisticated jazzy style that reminds us of early 60s work by Dinah Washington or Nancy Wilson. Titles include "By Myself", "My Guy", "Once In A Lifetime", and "Unforgettable". (Cover has light wear.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

I've Always Been Country
Paramount, 1974. Very Good+
Although Ivory Joe Hunter always recorded a lot of country songs in his career (hence the title), his sound on those recordings was always similar to the Ray Charles, Brook Benton, Solomon Burke country soul sound – and not really straight country, which is what this album is. Buddah, 1974. Very Good+
A really bold step forward for Norman Connors – a set that's still got all the spiritual jazz elements of his roots, but which also adds in some more soul and funk elements too! Virgin (UK), 1975. Very Good+
Weird bit of funkiness from Virgin, with the sort of funk/jazz/rock crossover sound on a few of their other records from this period. There's lots of nice moogy bits and cool electric piano stuff. Vocals sometimes mess this up, but there's enough instrumental moments to keep it groovin'. With ... LP, Vinyl record album

Great stuff – the beginning of the Love Unlimited dynasty! As we're sure you know, Barry White produced this little gem of a record, and the record was a key proving ground for many of his stone cold soul production ideas before he went off and started doing the lead vocals himself. Capitol, 1978. Very Good+
An obscure soundtrack for a late blacksploitation film starring Ron O'Neal. Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Electric Byrd
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+
Donald Byrd in a sweet electric mode – as you'd guess from the title! The set was recorded right before Byrd's legendary run with Larry Mizell in the early 70s – and the electric approach is a bit different here – a style that blends Byrd's wonderful trumpet lines with the larger ... Funky Aussie madness, from this legendary band with a sound that's somewhere between the Clarke-Boland Big Band, and 70s cop show records!
