Mixed Roots (Laurie)
LP (Item 36374) Laurie, Mid 70s — Condition: Sealed
The cover's not much to look at – but it houses a mighty nice set of funky 70s jazz! Drummer Al Foster leads the crew on this obscure session produced by Teo Macero for the mostly-rock Laurie label – and even though the album's kind of hidden under a completely innocuous cover that has a closeup of a Christmas Tree (?), it bursts out with a strong funky jazz groove that reminds us of some of the best drum-heavy electric 70s sessions in our collection, like work by Ed Thigpen or Les DeMerle. Players include Masabumi Kikuchi on electric piano, Mike Brecker and Sam Morrison on saxes, and Paul Metzke on guitar – and Teo Macero also sits in on the electric keys on one of the album's mellower cuts. There's not really any standout drum breaks that we caught on the set – but there are a lot of great choppy funk tracks in that "heavy drums meet riffing reeds" style that was started by Elvin Jones and popularized by Stone Alliance. Titles include "Mixed Roots", "Ya Damn Right", "Pauletta", "Double Stuff", and "Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".
