Chicago Theme

LP (Item 36367) CTI, 1975 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
One of Hubert Laws' funkiest records for CTI – recorded with a full group funky style that's plenty darn great, and a lot harder-hitting than some of Hubert's more laidback sessions for the label! Arrangements are by Bob James and Laws – working here with a large batch of players who come together beautifully, almost in the style of a funky 70s cop show soundtrack! James plays keyboards, and other players include George Benson, Phil Upchurch, Stanley Clarke, Randy Brecker, Don Grolnick, and Ron Carter – on titles that include James' own "Chicago Theme", a great cover of "Midnight At The Oasis" with wonderful drums from Steve Gadd, who also kicks it nice and large on Laws' own "I Had A Dream". Other tracks include "Going Home", "I Had A Dream", and "Inflation Chaser".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Say It With Silence
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
Nothing too silent here, as the set's filled with the kind of soulful fusion grooves we'd expect from Hubert Laws in the 70s! The album's a real standout in his Columbia catalog – a perfectly balanced set that features plenty of great work from Hubert on flute, amidst arrangements that also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hubert Laws

San Francisco Concert
CTI, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Really wonderful work from Hubert Laws – maybe one of his greatest albums for CTI! The record has a laidback feel that's similar to most of Laws' other work for the label, but somehow the live setting also brings out a bit more edge – and gives the record a gently funky groove that's ... Laws Of Jazz
Atlantic, 1964. Very Good+
Massive early work from Hubert Laws – and a set that really shows some more the more Latin and soul sides of his talents! Tracks here have a tight punch throughout – with some great New York 60s rhythms that feature a young Chick (then called "Armando") Corea on piano, then a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

One
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! CTI, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet CTI grooving from George Benson – one of his hardest-hitting albums of the time! Prelude
CTI, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
A legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! CTI/A&M, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Super-dope work from the great Wes Montgomery – set to excellent early CTI arrangements from Don Sebesky and Deodato! Paul Desmond

From The Hot Afternoon
A&M/CTI, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
Incredible stuff – and a record that grows more and more important to us over the years! Desmond's best known as the icy alto behind Dave Brubeck's big records of the 50s, but by this point in his career, he'd developed a keen interest in Brazilian music – and was working at a level ... CTI, 1974. Near Mint-
An excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting!
