All Star Sessions (Informal Jazz/Homecoming)

LP (Item 362751) Prestige/Riverside, 1956/1961 — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
2 of the few sessions that pianist Elmo Hope cut as a leader in groups with horn players – back to back in a 2LP set, with great notes! The first disc on the set features material from the album Informal Jazz – a 1956 blowing session with Hope on the keys, and a great group that includes Donald Byrd, John Coltrane, and Hank Mobley – plus Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The 4 tracks from that session are all nice and long, with plenty of solo space – and titles include "Weeja", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "On It", and "Avalon". Next up is material from the album Homecoming – a great little album that Hope made upon his return to the east coast in the early 60s, not too long before he passed away. Half the tunes are cut with a sextet that features Blue Mitchell, Frank Foster, and Jimmy Heath – and the other are cut with a trio that features Hope, Percy Heath, and Philly Joe Jones, who provide the rhythm for the sextet tunes. The mix of settings is about half and half – and titles include "Moe Jr", "La Berthe", "Eyes So Beautiful", and "One Mo Blues". It's great to hear Hope back with horns, after cutting so many trio sides during this point in his life – and his unique style on the keys is still matched nicely with the larger group of players.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s issue. Cover has a cut corner, light surface wear, and minor splitting on the top seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

In The Beginning
Prestige, Late 40s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige. The set's an essential one, because although you often hear references to this material, most of it was originally ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk

Golden Monk
Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Some excellent Monk from the mid 50s – recorded between the early Blue Note sides and the later revolutionary ones for Riverside, all featuring Monk in some pretty heavy tenor company! Side one features Monk playing with Frank Foster, Ray Copeland, Curley Russell, and Art Blakey – on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coleman Hawkins

Hawk Flies High
Riverside, 1957. Very Good+
A key album in the reintroduction of Coleman Hawkins in the late 50s – recorded in a style that still bears a lot of traces of earlier years, but at a time when Hawk was being claimed as a key influence by a variety of younger modernists! The set's got a sense of freedom that's really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Byrd

Byrd At The Gate
Riverside, 1963. Very Good+
Byrd's trio gets some great help here from Clark Terry on trumpet and Seldon Powell on tenor – in tracks that include "More", "Ela Me Deixou", "Broadway", "Some Other Spring", and "Shiny Stockings". LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Lockjaw Davis

Smokin'
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
The title's certainly right – as the set's a smoker of a record from the mighty Eddie Lockjaw Davis – really hitting his best groove here, and opening up on tunes that are even stronger than his classic Cookbook material! The group includes Shirley Scott on Hammond, and Jerome ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
Great later issue of two classic Prestige hardbop albums from the 50s! First up is Two Trumpets – one of those wonderful late 50s Prestige Records blowing sessions that really let individual players have lots of the right sort of space to find their own voice alongside each other! Byrd and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1958. Near Mint-
A surprisingly wonderful set from Wynton Kelly – really fluid and swinging, and with a unique approach on half the material! The core group of the set features Kenny Burrell on guitar, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but then Jones sits it out on the second side ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Evans

Big Stuff!
Prestige, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Fantastic early work from Gil Evans – emerging here in this early session as an already far-thinking modernist. The tracks are shorter and less ambitious than some of Evans' work on Impulse, but the group is excellent – and even in a shorter format, the conception of the work still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barry Harris

Listen To Barry Harris
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
One of the rarest Barry Harris albums – and an obscure solo session from 1961! Solo sessions were not that common at the time in the jazz industry, and it was even less common for a young player like Harris to get the chance to record the album. The record shows him in a lyrical complicated ... LP, Vinyl record album
Candid, 1960. Near Mint-
One of the most righteous albums that Max Roach ever cut – and a monumental jazz release from the heart of the Civil Rights era! As you can guess from the cover and title, there's a very political bent to the record – served up in righteous lyrics penned by Oscar Brand Jr, and sung by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! The tracks are long, the jams are hard, and the whole thing has a lot more funk than some of the noise you'd get on other Miles albums of the time – thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Sun Ship
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! The record's got the group really pushing forward strongly – hitting a Love Supreme mode, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
