Great King Curtis

LP (Item 362655) Atlantic/Clarion, Late 50s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

4.80 11

A tasty set that documents the early work of King Curtis on Atlantic – packaged here on the label's small budget imprint Clarion, in a hard to find 60s package! A number of the tracks on the set were early Atlantic singles by King, and they predate his later 60s work by a number of years – and feature a much rawer, R&B-inspired sort of groove. Titles include "Lil Brother", "Cuban Twilight", "Snake Eyes", "The Groove", "The Shake", "Jaywalk", and "Chili". (Cover is worn, with some wrinkling, stains and a cutout hole. Vinyl plays with a few clicks.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, 1976. Very Good
Quite possibly the best record ever by The Trammps – halfway between their roots in the early 70s east coast indie club scene, and the smoother approach of their later disco hits! The set is prime Sigma Sound disco – with strong harmonies by the group in a post-Spinners mode, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Warm & Tender Soul
Atlantic, 1966. Sealed
Warm and tender, but pretty darn rootsy too – a beautiful illustration of the sound that made Percy Sledge one of the deepest soul singers to record for Atlantic in the 60s! Sledge has this raspy power that grabs us right from the start – that quality that made his music resonate ... LP, Vinyl record album

Piece Of The Action
Curtom, 1977. Very Good+
One of the last great 70s soundtracks on Curtom Records – a smoking little set that pairs the music of Curtis Mayfield with the vocals of Mavis Staples! Curtis is very much in charge of the record from the start, and works in a hard-stepping and righteous mode that recalls his earlier work ... LP, Vinyl record album
