Really standout material from Lucky – an excellent set of small group sessions that features Oscar Pettiford on bass! The format's a bit like the small combo mode that Americans from larger touring ensembles were recording in Europe – a bit more laidback, and with more solo focus for players who were sometimes eclipsed in larger groups. One side has Lucky playing with Hank Jones, Pettiford, and Osie Johnson in the rhythm section – plus "Jim Whatsmyname" on trombone, clearly another player working here against contractual rules. The flip is just trio material – spare and beautiful, with Lucky's tenor set against Pettiford's bass and the guitar of Skeeter Best.
