❔

Classic! The third LP from the Time, and last before Morris Day went off and started his solo career – though by this point Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had departed the group. Nonetheless, the sound is still tight modern funk, with Jesse Johnson and crew keeping things in the great post-Prince Minneapolis pop-funk sound, including some nice dance numbers like "Jungle Love" and "The Bird" – and Morris just being Morris on cuts like "My Drawers", "Chili Sauce" and "If The Kid Can't Make You Come".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Candi Staton

Candi Staton (1980)
Warner, 1980. Near Mint-
A new day for Candi Stanton – kicking off the 80s with a tighter grooving modern soul sound – and she nails it! Of course, Candi started as a sweet southern soul singer, hit big with her LA single "Young Hearts Run Free", and is here reinventing herself as a sophisticated ... LP, Vinyl record album

William D Smith

Good Feelin'
Warner, 1976. Very Good
An overlooked chapter in the mainstream rise of New Orleans soul in the 70s – and a great little set arranged and produced by Allen Toussaint during his years on Warner Brothers! The album's got a similar feel to Toussaint's own albums for Warner, although perhaps a bit mellower and more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Graham Central Station

Mirror
Warner, 1976. Very Good
Larry Graham and crew are definitely going for a fuller sound on this set – starting off the record with a funky marching band, in Tusk-like fashion – then rolling into some bass-heavy funk that tops even their previous records for tightness! The groove is a key element in the growth ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1982. Near Mint-
Bootsy Collins steps strongly from the shadow of George Clinton here – and wrote, arranged, and produced most of the album himself! Of course, George was having plenty of his own troubles at the time – but that only allowed Bootsy to take the helm even more, and step out with a batch ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1978. Very Good Gatefold
What can we say? Bootsy's on top of the world here – not only The Player Of The Year, but also the most soulful artist in the P-Funk stable, and a master of the smooth, sly, slinky groove that would forever be taken up by bands from LA – both in the immediate soul years and in later ... Chaka Khan

Naughty
Warner, 1980. Very Good+
A great album of mellow modern soul tracks recorded in Chaka's post-Rufus years! The record was produced by the great Arif Mardin, the man who made so many of the 70s Atlantic soul records work so well – and he handled Chaka's voice with a sweet sweet sound that you don't always get on her ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Graham

One In A Million You
Warner, 1980. Very Good
Larry Graham hits the slow jam generation – stepping aside from his funkier groove for this classic album – a record that gave the world a huge crossover cut in the title track! The main focus here is on Larry's vocals, not his basswork – and he does a surprisingly good job as a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Venus Dodson

Night Rider
RFC/Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
A soaring club classic from Venus Dodson – and a set that's maybe equally well-known for its strong production work from clubby maestros Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess – who each handled one side of the album! The tunes build beautifully with all those well-crafted, deeply soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prince

Purple Rain
Warner, 1984. Near Mint-
One of the greatest crossover albums of the 80s – and the record that catapulted Prince very firmly into the mainstream! There's a tightness here that surpasses even that of Prince's early classics for Warner Brothers – an unabashed love of a pop hook that makes for some incredibly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gladys Knight & The Pips

Claudine – Original Soundtrack
Buddah, 1974. Very Good+
A wonderful mid 70s set from Gladys Knight & The Pips – a soundtrack date written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, who really helps bring a lot of depth to their music! Curtis really helps Knight and the group get out of some of their hit cliches of the 70s, and find some hipper space ... LP, Vinyl record album
SOUL, 1966. Very Good+
A great full length album from Motown's mighty Jimmy Ruffin – and a set with a lot deeper soul sound than you'd guess from the "top ten" in the title! The music's not commercial, but some of the sharpest Motown soul of the time – the kind of work that made the young Jimmy as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirelles

Hear & Now
Pricewise/Scepter, 1964. Very Good+
A set that was issued by the Pricewise budget subsidiary of Scepter Records – but one that also features some great lesser-known work by The Shirelles – material that was still unreleased at the time of this LP, mixed here with some bigger hits to round things out nicely! The groove is ... LP, Vinyl record album
