LP, Vinyl record album

A surprisingly excellent record – a blend of off-kilter vocals, funky fusion, and jazz violin – also one of Noel Pointer's most soul-based albums, thanks to some great arrangements from Chisoul maestro Richard Evans! The album takes the electric feel of Pointer's 70s work, and gives it a nice Capitol Rare twist – hitting some really sweet mellow tunes that really put the violin on back burner, and which focus on Pointer's compelling and spacey vocals. Includes the massive stepper "We Took The Long Way Home", the 80s groover "Play The Part", and the mellow burner "Catch Me". Other tracks include "Direct Hit", "Don't Do It Again", "Life Time Of Love", "Living Through The Ghost", and "When Love Walks In The Door". (Cover has a cutout hole & some minor staining.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Calling
United Artists, 1980. Very Good+
Sublime work from Noel Pointer – a set that sparkles equally from both his soul and jazz talents! The record's a perfect example of the way that key artists like Pointer were blending R&B and fusion at the end of the 70s – really perfecting earlier experiments of cats like Norman ... Need Of Love
Warner, 1971. Very Good-
One of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago. At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based ... LP, Vinyl record album
Liberty, Early 60s. Sealed
A nice batch of pop soul on Liberty from Timi Yuro – an underappreciated vocalist who walked that fine line between uptown soul and pop vocals! Like so many Liberty recordings of the era, the arrangements are big and polished, courtesty of Bert Keyes. The backing vocals are just as sparking ... LP, Vinyl record album
Anacostia (1978)
Tabu, 1978. Near Mint-
Anacostia make the move to Tabu Records for this sweet second set – and they seem to have picked up more of a groove along the way! The same elements as before are firmly in place here – production by Charles Kipps, with supervision from Van McCoy – but the groove is a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album
Soul
Liberty, Early 60s. Very Good+
"Soul" is right – and "excellent" is also! Timi Yuro's early 60s work is fantastic – and is part diva bluesy soul, ala Etta James or Lorez Alexandria, and part country soul, ala Ray Charles or Brook Benton. Her voice is incredible, with a clear tone, yet ... LP, Vinyl record album
Black & Blue
Philadelphia International, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Classic Philly soul from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A bomb! The title of this one says it all – a burning anthem of pride and power, issued in 1969, at the end of one of the most troubling decades in America. James answers all the Uncle Tom cries from his critics – and comes up with "Say It Loud", an instant chant that was ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1976. Very Good- Gatefold
Quite possibly the funkiest album ever from Pleasure – and that's saying a heck of a lot! The album grooves from the very first note – and moves through some of the group's tightest, most rock-solid numbers – all of which use their trademark blend of funky and soul, but which ... Booker T Set
Stax, 1969. Near Mint-
Later work from Booker T and crew – an album that always gets lost in the shuffle, but which also includes lots of great moments, and a bit more funk than in earlier years! The rhythm section's loosening up a bit on the set – led by the mighty Al Jackson, and working past that tight ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1980. Very Good
One of the most compelling later albums on Philly International – a killer mix of jazzy numbers that have a very different style than most of the other Philly work at the time! Even though Leon Huff had been banging around in soul music for about 15 years – most famously as half of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Joy & Pain
Capitol, 1980. Very Good
Classic modern soul from the legendary Frankie Beverly! The record's perhaps one of their best remembered – most likely for the killer cut "Joy & Pain", which has a great hook that's been sampled many times over the years. The record also features the wonderful "Southern ... LP, Vinyl record album
Love In All Flavors
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint-
Lesser-known material by Ronnie, but some great stuff! Ronnie's older than during his falsetto soul early years – and he's working here with some impeccably mature Chicago soul arrangements by Gene Barge, Gene Page, and Richard Evans. The album's produced by the always-great modern soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
