Wailing Buddy Rich

LP (Item 360948) Norgran, Early 50s — Condition: Very Good
Originally: 16.99
Buddy Rich is definitely wailing on this one – an open-ended all-star set that features work from Ben Webster on tenor, Sonny Criss on alto, Harry Edison and Joe Newman on trumpets, Oscar Peterson on piano, and Freddie Greene on guitar! The album features 4 long tracks – all in the best Verve relaxed jam session mode, with plenty of room for solos –and titles include "The Monster", "Sunday", "Smooth One", and "Broadway".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Black label Norgran pressing, with trumpeter logo. Cover has a nicely taped top seam. The back cover has light aging, tiny paint spots.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roar Of '74
Groove Merchant, 1973. Near Mint-
One of the funkiest Buddy Rich albums of the 70s – a mad screaming affair that's overflowing with great tunes! The band on the set is very full – with a heck of a lot of trumpets in the brass section, set next to searing sax work by the great Pat LaBarbera. But even better is the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie & Strings
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good
Sublime work by Dizzy! Although Charlie Parker's "with strings" experiments are always the best known in the Verve catalog, Dizzy's work in this vein is simply amazing, and has him playing in a more avant garde setting than you'll ever hear from the time! The set features tracks that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bud Powell

Bud Powell '57
Norgran, 1954/1955. Very Good-
The title says "57", but the music's from a few years before – yet that's OK with us, because Bud Powell always has a sound that's instantly timeless no matter what the year! The album brings together sides from Verve dates in 1954 and 1955 – one featuring Art Blakey on drums ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Sextet
Norgran, 1956. Near Mint-
That's the Modern Jazz Sextet – not the Modern Jazz Quartet – although the group definitely borrows a bit of energy from the MJQ, and some personnel too! Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+
The quintessential sound of late 60s Horace Silver – on one hand still very much in the Blue Note soul jazz groove that earned him plenty of jukebox single play, but on the other hand really stretching out with a style that's a bit more righteous than before!
