Best Of Stan Getz

LP (Item 360111) Verve, Late 50s/Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

A pretty well done collection of Stan's best work for Verve from the late 50s and early 60s – packaged in a cover that shows him with his wife and kids! (For some odd reason, many of Stan's albums from the time have him with kids on the front. Was Verve trying to sell him as the "family man" of jazz?) Titles include "Her", "Desafinado", "Girl From Ipanema", "Nature Boy", "Stan's Blues", "Here's That Rainy Day", and "The Telephone Song".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roost/Vogue (UK), Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP
Essential early work by Stan – a 2LP collection of his early 50s recordings for the Roost label under his own name – some quartet dates with Horace Silver or Al Haig on piano, some quintet sides with the groundbreaking assemblage that featured Jimmy Raney on guitar, whose icy clear tone ... Focus (2nd cover)
Verve, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
Oft-overlooked album that's actually one of Getz's most far-reaching of the 60s! Recorded in the year before he got caught up in his bossa pop frenzy, the record shows Getz as a darkly toned modernist, weaving out complex solos over the album's extended suite "Focus", written and ... One of the first real moments of genius from the young Stan Getz – his collaboration with guitarist Jimmy Raney, whose sharp tone matched the rasp of Stan's tenor beautifully! An incredibly haunting session that has Stan's edgey alto fronting some of Russ Garcia's arch-modernist string arrangements – similar to those that he contributed to other Verve albums of the same style. Stan Getz makes a key musical trip to Sweden – to showcase his affection for a jazz scene that had been growing strongly in the postwar years – often in directions that were similar to Stan's own sound at the time! A great little follow-up to the classic West Coast Jazz album recorded by Stan Getz – and like that one, a set to feature some great rhythm accompaniment from the trio of Lou Levy on piano, Stan Levey on drums, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass! Steamer
Verve, 1956. Very Good
The title may be a bit strangely put – as "Steamer" isn't a word that we'd necessarily think to use with the gently flowing tenor tone of Stan Getz – but that doesn't stop the album from being a great one, and perhaps in Getz-like terms, it might well have a bit more steam ...
