Choice! – The Best Of The Ramsey Lewis Trio

LP (Item 35899) Argo, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
A sparkling collection of the soul jazz groovers churned out by Ramsey's famous first trio – the groundbreaking ensemble that featured Eldee Young on bass and Redd Holt on drums. The set does a good job of pushing past obvious hits, and includes some tasty little groovers like "Travel On", "Somethin You Got", "Look A Here", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It", "Hello, Cello", and the classic "Blues For Night Owls".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono blue fade label pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ramsey Lewis Trio

Down To Earth
Mercury, 1958. Very Good+
From their inception in late 1956, Ramsey Lewis and his famous Young/Holt-era trio were destined for great jazz fame. This 1958 session on Mercury (then based in the group's native Chicago) catches the trio right at the beginning – when they were taking tunes that were pretty well known, and ... Argo, 1961. Very Good
A record with a gimmick – but one that's totally great, and really unique for the time! The "1 to 10" in the title is the way that the album spins out – as track 1 features Golson blowing solo tenor, track 2 features him in duet, track 3 a trio – and so on, until track ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Pot Luck
Argo, 1963. Very Good+
Ramsey and the classic trio with Eldee Young and Red Holt – grooving away on a pot luck batch of tunes that includes material from a wide wide variety of sources, all turned into soul jazz magic by the boys! Believe it or not, Ramsey takes tunes like "Andaluza", "Arrividerci ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

In Crowd
Argo, 1965. Very Good-
One of the biggest jazz albums of the 60s – and a crucial crossover set from the legendary Ramsey Lewis trio! The record's a live one, which gives the group a perfect chance to show off their special genius – not just soulful grooves from Ramsey on piano, but wickedly sharp and playful ... Ahmad Jamal

Extensions
Argo, 1965. Near Mint-
A crucial album for Jamal – one in which he's really working in the "extensions" mode promised in the title! The tracks are all quite long – far longer than on his usual Argo sides, which is why there's only 4 in all on the whole album. The feel of the album is free and ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Hey It's James Moody
Argo, 1959. Near Mint-
A magnificent little album – one of James Moody's first collaborations with arranger Tom McIntosh – one of the most sensitive jazz voices of his time. McIntosh works in a world of many tones and colors – and he really pushes Moody past straighter solo approaches, into a mode ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1962. Very Good
Really wonderful work from trombonist Al Grey – sounding hipper here than at any other point in his career! One of the great reason for Al's sound here is the presence of tenorist Billy Mitchell – a partner with Al in the Basie band, and a great player who gives just about any session ... Argo, 1960. Very Good
One of the rarest albums of Chicago jazz from the 50s – and one of the greatest, too! Although Walter Perkins' MJT+3 went onto cut a number of records on Vee Jay with a different lineup, this early session features an all-Chicago lineup that differs from the later one, which was augmented by ... Argo, 1964. Very Good+
A killer live set from Ramsey Lewis and his classic early 60s trio – a record that's not nearly as well known as The In Crowd, but every bit as great! Drummer Red Holt and bassist Eldee Young really get in some great elements here – working with Ramsey's piano in a groove that's far ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dodo Marmarosa

Dodo's Back!
Argo, 1961. Near Mint-
A wonderful later album from pianist Dodo Marmarosa – quite possibly his greatest record ever! The set's an obscure "comeback" date recorded in Chicago for Chess in the early 60s – a trio session with Richard Evans on bass and Marshall Thompson on drums – both working ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1960. Very Good+
A rare setting for Moody – a player who rarely cut sides with larger backing, but who sounds really wonderful here! The album's got Moody blowing mostly alto, and a bit of flute – over large backings by Torrie Zito that feature equal parts strings and woodwinds – conducted in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

One
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! This is the album where all the magic starts – the first of many extremely successful albums that Bob recorded during the 70s under his own name, and almost the birthplace of the modern hip hop ...
