Throwin' Down

LP (Item 358398) Gordy, 1982 — Condition: Very Good+

Rick James is massively throwing down on this classic set – tight, right, and on the money all the way through – in that trademark groove that so many others would try to cop, but never get this right! The album bristles with energy right from the start – lots of bass at the bottom of the grooves, riffing guitar in the middle, and those badass vocals of James' that mange to sound nasty even when they're sweet! But if you know Rick, you know that sweetness isn't the aim here – and the album drips with party sex all the way through – over funk classics that include "Standing On The Top", "Teardrops", "Money Talks", "Throwdown", "Hard To Get", "69 Times" and "Dance Wit Me".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover is still in the shrinkwrap, with hype sticker. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rick James

Fire It Up
Gordy, 1979. Near Mint-
Rick James fires it up at the end of the 70s – stepping out at full star power that has him rivaling the strength of Bootsy Collins at Warner, and paving the way for the rise of Prince in the early 80s! As with Prince, James' version of funk here is a bit offbeat – lots of riffing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gordy, 1979. Very Good+
Think what you might about Rick James, this is actually a pretty darn funky album – with lots of tight bass-heavy grooves! Rick's working here with the Stone City Band, in a style that's leaner and less commercial than some of his later work – going for a mainstream funk approach, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Undisputed Truth

Down To Earth
Gordy, 1974. Very Good
Undisputed Truth at the height of their powers – still working in the psychedelic soul style they forged with Norman Whitfield at the end of the 60s – but with a groove that's tighter and sharper than ever before! We might well call the record the funkiest the group ever cut – as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gordy, 1980. Very Good+
One of the last records Switch recorded before Philip Ingram went solo, and the rest of the guys broke off into DeBarge – and an album with some surprisingly sweet soul moments! 21st Creation

Break Thru
Gordy, 1978. Near Mint-
An obscure Motown group from the end of the 70s – 21st Creation had a strident uptempo group sound that reminds us of some of the more successful disco hits of Tavares from the same time. The arrangements are mostly club-oriented – handled by Willie Hutch, Gene Page, and Harold Johnson ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Do The Temptations
Gordy, 1976. Sealed
The Temptations doing The Temptations and doing it pretty darn well – further proof that the group just kept on going with greatness, even during the years of their lesser fame! The album's got a slight bit of mid 70s polish – a bit of a nod towards the dancefloor at times, but never ... LP, Vinyl record album

Val Young

Seduction
Gordy, 1985. Near Mint-
A lost little gem from the Rick James camp – a bit obscure, despite the fact that Val's a former Bride Of Funkenstein! Val's not as well known as some of the other artists that Rick James worked with back in the 80s – but given her resume, she's got a solidly soulful sound that works ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shoulda Gone Dancin
Gordy, 1979. Near Mint-

Solid Rock
Gordy, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
