Sonny Rollins — Sonny Rollins Brass/Sonny Rollins Trio ... CD 5.99
Quite an unusual record for Sonny Rollins – but a great one too! At first glance the concept is a strange one – almost a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements – but oddly, the idea works, and works nicely – as Rollins' edgey solos cut through the heavy arrangements with ease, creating some angular counterpoint and a tight little space to make his own sound. The group was conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and the flipside of the album features Rollins playing in a small trio with the great Henry Grimes on bass (who also played with Rollins on some of his best sessions from the time!) and Charles Wright on drums. Titles include "Manhattan", "If You Were The Only Girl In the World", "Who Cares?", and "Far Out East". Originally issued on MGM/Metro – but this is the Verve pressing.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Early 80s Japanese stereo Polydor pressing – UMV 2555, with insert.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sonny Rollins

Alfie
Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful soundtrack to the dark British comedy of the same name – starring a young Michael Caine! You might expect it to be a bit schmaltzy, but it's pure jazz all the way through, and features strong inside playing by Rollins over lively orchestrations by Oliver Nelson – filled ... Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
One of the greatest Sonny Rollins records ever – and a genre-defining record that really introduced the world to the concept of a tenor saxophone trio! Rollins is incredible here – really at his best and most adventurous, and almost light years ahead of his work from just a few short ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Shadow Waltz
Jazzland, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good
Early 60's album that repackages Rollins' classic Freedom Suite recording for Riverside. The record is exactly the same – and features Rollins on tenor, in a spare stripped-down trio that include Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach. His playing is amazing – especially on the extended "F ... Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA! The album has a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good
A seminal middle period album from Jimmy – one recorded right before he really opened it up, but still with more modern touches than some of his earlier work! The group's a quartet – with the great Lawrence Marable on drums, Jimmy Rowles on piano, and Red Mitchell on bass – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Groovy work from the 60s – with Ben Webster backing up the vocals of Jimmy Witherspoon! LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

Getz/Gilberto #2
Verve, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1961. Very Good+
While actually not as electrifying as some of Dizzy's other albums from the time, this one's still pretty darn great, and features his great group with Leo Wright on alto and Lalo Schfrin on piano. The band grooves with a subtly Latinish vibe, and the tracks are nice and long long long. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Krupa

Drummer Man
Verve, 1956. Near Mint-
Kind of a reprise of earlier days – one that reunites Krupa with Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge, as the group runs through some material from earlier years. Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, Billy Byers, and Nat Pierce – and the set actually swings more cleanly than some of Krupa's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1955. Very Good+
One of the rarest albums by the guitar jazz great Tal Farlow! The set's one of Tal's best for Verve (although they're all pretty darn good), and it features his edgey guitar in a west coast rhythm trio with Claude Williamson on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. The titles are ... LP, Vinyl record album

Out Of The Storm
Verve, 1966. Near Mint-
One of THE greatest Verve albums of the 60s – an incredible set that's one of the few older records made as a leader by drummer Ed Thigpen! The sound here is incredibly hard to describe – a light mix of guitar from Kenny Burrell, piano from Herbie Hancock, and trumpet from Clark Terry ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1961. Sealed
Excellent Verve work from Herbie – a sweet little set with a nice Latin undercurrent! The style here is similar to that of Herbie's Flautista album – and has some larger arrangements from a nonet set the backdrop for some evocative flute solos from Mann. The instrumentation is very ... LP, Vinyl record album
