Montreux One

LP (Item 35703) Arista Freedom, 1975 — Condition: Near Mint-

Great live material from Shepp – not out or crazy, but also not spiritual or hippy dippy, either. The record's kind of a perfectly soulful straight ahead set – in a mode that hints at the traditional direction Shepp would take at the time, but with a lot more interesting moments. The group's a quartet with Charles Greenlee on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – and the tracks feature Shepp soloing with a lot of soul, and criss crossing styles from track to track. "U-jamaa" is a strong straight number – and the 3 other titles are "Lush Life", "Crucificado" and "Miss Toni".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch and a stain at the spine.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

BYG/Affinity (UK), 1969. Very Good+
One of the hardest to find of the Shepp albums for Actuel, especially in this original format! These are long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the decade, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", and "My ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Sea Of Faces
Black Saint (Italy), 1975. Very Good Gatefold
A great little set from Archie Shepp – one of his strongest of the 70s, and a real return to the kind of spiritual jamming he was doing at the end of his time with Impulse Records! The album's well-known for it's great track "Song For Mozambique" – a spare and righteous ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Tray Of Silver
Denon (Japan), 1979. Near Mint-
One of Shepp's excellent straight sides from the late 70s – and like the rest of the best, recorded as a Japanese-only session for Denon. The "silver" in the title is Horace Silver – as 3 of the album's 4 long tracks are Silver compositions – played by Shepp with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp

Doodlin
Inner City, 1976. Near Mint-
A very different album from Archie Shepp – and an introspective record that shows a whole new side of his talents! For the session, Shepp plays piano, not tenor – an instrument he handles with an angular, modern tone – one that seems to echo bits of Herbie Nichols and Thelonious ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fire Music
Impulse, 1965. Very Good Gatefold
Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! A classic bit of avant Shepp for Impulse – recorded in the mid 60s, at the same time as the Live in San Francisco album, with the same quintet, but not issued until years later! Wonderful early work from the great pianist Stanley Cowell – a set that pre-dates his famous sides for the Strata East label – but which soars out in a very similar style! Arista Freedom, 1975. Near Mint-
One of the better recordings created for the Arista/Freedom series, rather than licensed from tapes Alan Bates had already produced for Black Lion – and a nice set of loft jazz played by Lowe with help from Lester and Joseph Bowie, Abdul Wadud, Steve Reid, and Charles Bobo Shaw.
