LP, Vinyl record album

A huge breakthrough from Levert – the group's third album, and a record that's filled with some really top-shelf R&B for the time! The tracks are a great transition in soul styles – classic harmony vocal sounds, produced with a slowjam style that's totally great – a bit like quiet storm of the 80s, but with more of a street edge overall! The mellowest moments are the best ones – and titles include "Casanova", "Throwdown", "My Forever Love", "In N Out", "Temptation", and "Don't U Think It's Time".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Just Coolin'
Atlantic, 1988. Very Good+
If you'd told us years ago we'd be digging this sort of late 80s commercial soul, we'd have laughed in your face. But nostalgia has taken hold, and we can't argue with the songcraft here, even if the production (and band's fashion sense) is a bit dated. Not a classic, by any means, but not as ... Dealing With Hard Times
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good
A sublime set of soul instrumentals – very funky work, and sort of a 70s follow-up to the Soulful Strings albums on Cadet Records from the 60s! Maestro Richard Evans is at the top of his game here – stepping out with that hip Chisoul mode he first forged at Chess, tuned here towards ... LP, Vinyl record album

Supersound
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good
Jimmy Castor bursts forward here with a definite supersound – a groove that's different than his fuzzier work for RCA Records, but still equally funky throughout! Castor's still quite the multi-instrumentalist on the record – as in addition to singing lead, he plays plenty of soprano ... LP, Vinyl record album

A key moment in the career of Esther Phillips – and a record that really has her shaking off the rougher bluesy styles of the earlier years, and pointing the way towards strong jazz success in the 70s! The long-overdue full length debut from Phillip Mitchell – an artist who cut some great singles over the course of the 70s, and also wrote a fair bit of classics for other, bigger name acts! Love You Save
Atlantic/Dial, 1966. Very Good
Buddy Killen's recordings of Joe Tex for the Dial label are not only some of the best soul records to come out of the south in the 60's, but they also established Joe as a totally unique singer, with a sound that was all his own, and a feel that was unlike anything else. One of the better soul groups of the early 80s – one who managed to mix electric keyboards with harmony vocals, yet still keep a sound that was pretty real. This album's got plenty of that great "wheeeeeep" keyboard sound, used to punctuate the songs' choruses, and lay down the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Aretha Arrives
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
Aretha Arrives in great style – and a mixture between her earlier vocal jazz years at Columbia, and her later southern soul sides of the 60s!
