❔
The group may be named Mass Production, but their sound is anything but – a really special fusion of key instrumental talents and vocal elements – all brought together in one of the tightest ensemble funk grooves of the time! Mass Production draw a bit from an Earth Wind & Fire tradition – especially some spiritual undercurrents to hold themselves together – but they've also got some of the fuller funk elements of the best dancefloor combos of the time – like Fatback, Cameo, or Con Funk Shun – all of whom would be a great comparison with this smoking debut. The instrumentation is razor-sharp, and never dips into any disco cliches at all – and at times, the guitars alone leave us breathless – as they chug forcefully over the rhythms, and really propel the tunes into the skies. Two of the best groovers include "I Like To Dance" and "Fun In The Sun" – and other titles include "Magic", "Wine-flow Disco", "Our Thought (To The World)", and "Just A Song".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has wear and aging.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sister Sledge

Love Somebody Today
Cotillion, 1980. Very Good+
A crisp, but funky set from Sister Sledge – produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic, who also lead the studio band – tight funky soul grooves all the way! Cotillion, 1976. Very Good+
Margie Joseph's really hitting on all burners here – thanks to sublime production from Lamont Dozier, working at the height of his mid 70s powers! Joseph's earlier deep soul vocals are given a nice sense of focus and righteous energy from Dozier's production – a fullness that somehow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Walter Jackson

Good To See You
Chi Sound/United Artists, 1978. Very Good+
Sophisticated soul from the great Walter Jackson – one of the best voices ever to come out of the Chicago soul scene, and a wonderful interpreter of just about any material! Jon Lucien

Song For My Lady
Columbia, 1975. Near Mint-
Excellent jazzy soul stuff by one of our favorite singers of all time! Esther Marrow

Sister Woman
Fantasy, 1972. Near Mint-
Very righteous work from Esther Marrow – an overlooked soul singer who works with a hell of a lot of pride and power! The set's an overlooked gem in the Fantasy catalog of the 70s, and it's one of only two secular soul albums cut by Marrow – and quite possibly the best of the bunch, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Funkadelic

Uncle Jam Wants You
Warner, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of our favorite Funkadelic albums ever – a tightly grooving classic that never lets up at all! Love We Have
Mercury, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Duets between Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager – done as serious, adult oriented soul tracks, one side of the album in an optimistic "The Love We Have" setting, the other in a sadder "The Love We Had" setting – both of them handled in a mode that's far far different ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carrie Lucas

Horsin Around
MCA/Constellation, 1984. Near Mint-
A surprisingly nice set from Carrie – produced with a bit of an electro flourish on the keys, and lots of sweet Solar production from labelmates like Reggie Calloway, Bill Wolfer, and the enigmatic Fenderella. Titles include "Hello Stranger", "Somebody Said", "Superst ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Carne

Closer Than Close
Mirage/Omni, 1986. Very Good+
Quite a different sound than Jean's Philly International recordings – although certainly a logical extension – and it's a sweeter than sweet set from the mid 80s that in turns both celebrates and transcends the production style of the era! Overall, Closer Than Close is a smooth batch ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint-
The group's past the true glory of their early Philly days, but they are still working here with Thom Bell – who's keeping up the strident groove approach that always worked well with the group's harmonies. Includes the tracks "One Man Wonderful Band", "Once You Fall In ... LP, Vinyl record album
