❔
The notes to this one say "This album gives the listener a rare opportunity to taste the past and present of the Average White Band." What does that mean? Well, it means that the band only came up with 4 new songs for the record – including "Kiss Me", "Love Won't Get In The Way", and "Growing Pains" – which means that Atlantic filled all of side two with older tracks from earlier albums. Fortunately, the cuts are all great – which means that the real value of this one is as a greatest hits comp, featuring funky classics like "Pick Up The Pieces", "Person To Person", "Cut The Cake", and "Love Of Your Own".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light aging and is lighlty bent at the top.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Average White Band

Feel No Fret
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great one that showcases the group's best second suit – their smooth compressed late 70s soul sound – a great evolution of their earlier groove, and one that showed them as a great mainstream soul act! The tunes are a bit mellower overall, but still have a lot of crackle and warmth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilson Pickett

Sound Of Wilson Pickett
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good
The sound of Wilson Pickett is the sound of soul – bursting out here proudly in a classic session that features production from Rick Hall and the Fame Studios team! The record's got a gritty, nitty kind of feel that easily makes it one of Wilson's best – and with backing that includes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Levert

Big Throwdown
Atlantic, 1987. Very Good+
A huge breakthrough from Levert – the group's third album, and a record that's filled with some really top-shelf R&B for the time! The tracks are a great transition in soul styles – classic harmony vocal sounds, produced with a slowjam style that's totally great – a bit like ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brandy

Atlantic, 1976. Very Good-
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good
A classic album of Atlantic R&B – issued soon after the tragic early death of the great Chuck Willis! Prince Phillip Mitchell

Top Of The Line
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good+
A classic set of smooth 70s soul from an under-recognized genius! Phillip Mitchell is a bit like his Atlantic Records contemporary Sam Dees – in that he wrote a lot of material for other singers, recorded a handful of singles, and worked mostly in the southern scene – but he also had a ... Wilson Pickett

Exciting Wilson Pickett
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+
Always exciting work from the Wicked Pickett – a set that's filled with sharp-edged soul tracks throughout – and which perfectly shows why Wilson was a key link between funk and soul back in the 60s! The album was recorded at the two great hubs of southern soul production in the 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, Early 60s. Very Good
The golden hits of The Drifters, but a set that mostly features on the group's great second chapter at Atlantic Records – a time when original singer Clyde McPhatter had left the group, and Ben E King and Rudy Lewis came in with a very different style in the lead! Ellen McIlwaine

We the People
Polydor, 1973. Very Good+
Wonderful work from the great Ellen McIllwaine! Ellen's certainly not a soul artist – but she's got a particularly soulful approach to folk rock – one that's made her a favorite of groovers worldwide in the past few decades, thanks to a big push from Gilles Peterson, and the club scene ...
