My Own Time And Space

LP (Item 352863) Catalyst, 1976 — Condition: Sealed
Gatefold
A warm set of groovers from Flip Nunez – a San Francisco-based pianist with a great Latin tinge, working here in a fantastic setting that makes for one of his greatest recordings! The album was recorded in SF in 1976, and it's got the laidback groove of some of the best sides coming from the area at the time – a sweet blend of fusion, Latin, and modal jazz grooving. Nunez plays electric piano, clavinet, piano, and organ – and a few tracks feature his vocals, which have a confident style that's somewhere between Mark Murphy and Tony Benett (in his jazzier mode.) The centerpiece of the album is a long mellow-grooving version of "See You Later", a tune that Flip wrote, and which has been covered on a number of other jazz dance classics over the years – but the album's filled with great tunes, like "D'ju Like Me", "This Time For Good", "Why Did You Come Into My Life", and "Mr Cool", a sweet little funky tune!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

King Pleasure

Original Moody's Mood
Prestige, 1952/1953/1954. Very Good
An important set that documents all of King's early vocalese jazz sides – pivotal vocal jazz recordings that were not only enormously popular with listeners around the country, but which also did a heck of a lot in the way of advancing the way that male singers handled lead vocals on jazz-base ... Colpix, 1962. Very Good+
Nina sings Ellington – but as always, she makes whatever she sings all her own! Lover
Decca, 1963. Very Good+
One of Peggy Lee's greatest albums ever – a set of tracks recorded with the Gordon Jenkins chorus and orchestra, in a moody sound that would forever be remembered by the brilliant title track! Lena Horne & Michel Legrand

Lena & Michel
RCA, 1975. Near Mint-
A sweetly mellow album of 70s work from Lena – cut in a mode that's as soulful as her sides for the Skye label a few years earlier, and handled by the same producer too! The main difference in the style is the presence of Michel Legrand – working here in a mode that's still got the ... LP, Vinyl record album

California Soul
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A very hip set of arrangements by LA bandleader Gerald Wilson – and one that takes his soul jazz stylings of earlier albums, and gives them a bit more of a late 60s funky sound. The band's pretty darn hip, and includes players like Anthony Ortega, Hadley Caliman, and Bobby Bryant – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Taylor Trio

New Billy Taylor Trio
ABC, 1958. Very Good+
Excellent 50s work from pianist Billy Taylor – a record that has him stepping out with even more command of the keys than his earlier sides for Prestige and Roost! Clarke Boland Big Band

Handle With Care
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1977. Very Good+
Mostly vocal – but a set that has Les singing and playing along with some very funky backing! The live setting does nothing to diminish the funky sound that Les had been hitting in the mid 70s – and in fact, it seems to let the players in the group open up even more, jamming it hard ...
