A classic from One Way – who're still going strong in the early 80s! The group's ace in the hole was always the great work of Al Hudson – a fearless leader who kept things funky, and who wrote in some great hooks to tracks that give them uncommon strength. Case in point is the classic "Cutie Pie", which is the leadoff track here – with a funky bassline would be right at home on George Clinton's Computer Games – but it really takes flight thanks to One Way's deeper-sinking hook. The album is among their bigger hits of the period – but it's also proof that they were still going strong creatively, too. No foolin'! Lots of solid cuts, including "Runnin Away", "Who's Foolin Who", "Sweet Lady", "Give Me One More Chance" and "You're So Very Special".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

MCA, 1985. Very Good+
Classic post-Prince commercial 80s soul! Even though Prince, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and even Andre Cymone are nowhere in sight, this classic 80s LP could just as well have come out of Minneapolis as Flint, Michigan, and we mean that in the best possible way. "Oh Sheila" has ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fancy Dancer
MCA, 1981. Near Mint-
A great little set from One Way – post disco Detroit dancefloor soul of the first order! There a crisp, tight bubbling sound that's pretty wonderful – and warm in the spots where so many records of the period and cold and mechanical. The tunes bounce along nicely with production from ... A great follow-up to War's first Music Band album – and proof that the group was still plenty darn funky at the end of the 70s! Although different from their original Chicano funk groove, the style here is still totally great – long, drawn-out funk that's filled with plenty of sharp ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rufus
MCA, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
An amazing debut from Rufus – a group so great, they were virtually a genre unto themselves during the 70s! MCA, 1982. Near Mint-
The Yates are one funky family – coming into the soul game a bit too late to cash in on the family group sound of the 70s, but more than making up for their lateness with a really soulful groove! As you might guess from the label and the title, the style here is strongly in an 80s groove ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1978. Very Good
One of the great albums from Terry Callier's "second chapter" on record – a time when he was working for Elektra Records, and doing work that was a bit straighter soul than before – and also slightly jazzy as well! The record's kind of a mix of jazzy grooves and smoother soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impact
Atco, 1976. Near Mint-
Plenty of Impact from this great Philly group – a soaring quartet who harmonize with some great Bobby Eli arrangements – at a level that shines as strongly as the best 70s work by Blue Magic or The Spinners!
