Ton-Ton Macoute!

LP (Item 3474) Atco, 1970 — Condition: Sealed

An excellent bit of raw funky southern soul from Johnny Jenkins – recorded in Macon, GA, and one of the last relics of the relations that Atlantic Records had with all of the little local scenes in the south! Ton-Ton Macoute is one of those records that manages to blend funk, blues, and southern rock & soul way, way better than so many pretenders from the time – just a damn near perfectly realized set ! Johnny Jenkins sings, stomps, plays guitar and blows harp (with some extra help from Duane Allman on the guitar front), and he runs through tracks like "Blind Bats & Swamp Rats", "Sick & Tired", "Voodoo In You", "Rollin' Stone", "Bad News", "Down Along The Cove", and the absolute classic, classic breakbeat track "I Walk On Guilded Splinters".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Capricorn pressing, CPN 0136, still sealed, with a Gift That Keeps On Giving sticker.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An incredible session of soul – tracks recorded live at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, featuring some of the hippest Stax and Atlantic artists in a very raw setting! Arthur Conley

Sweet Soul Music
Atco, 1967. Very Good+
One of the all-time soul classics from Atlantic – the fantastic debut of singer Arthur Conley, introduced as a protege of Otis Redding, who also produced the record! Dexter Wansel

Voyager
Philadelphia International, 1978. Near Mint-
Dexter Wansel keeps up the space jazz funk groove that was begun on Life On Mars – with those fat, thumping bass lines, elastic lead guitar, atmospheric soul vocals and loads and loads of keys – spatial work on Rhodes, Moogs and ARPs! It's all done in a funky style not always heard on ... LP, Vinyl record album

J Blackfoot

Physical Attraction
Sound Town, 1984. Sealed
A really nice little album from J Blackfoot – one that's recorded with a few 80s touches, but in a way that mostly preserves the sweetly crackling style that makes his vocals so wonderful! There's plenty of mellower tunes here that echo with the rich contribution that Blackfoot brought to ... LP, Vinyl record album

For too long we dismissed Roberta Flack out of hand because of her currency as a soft rock radio favorite, but her mid 70s output had more than its share of sublime, soulful moments, and this album is no exception. Ahhh, good ol' Mel & Tim – possibly our favorite soul duo ever, and a really dynamic pair that carve some great new territory away from the path set by Sam & Dave! A masterpiece of harmony soul – one of THE all-time greats of the genre, and a lasting treasure from The Stylistics!
