❔
A different record for Sam Rivers – especially when you compare it to the rest of his early 70s output! Rivers' own playing is still very similar to other records – in that he's blowing his head off on tenor, soprano, and flute – but the backing's by a pretty fierce rhythm combo that keeps on going in these modal lines, not really straight, but comping and vamping a lot in contrast to Rivers' freewheeling solos – a great balance that really sets this one apart. Players include Ted Dunbar, Dave Holland, and Barry Altschul – and titles include "Dawn", "Flare", "Flame", and "Scud".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(White label promo. Cover has a cut corner, hype sticker, ring and edge wear, price sticker remnants, peeled spots from sticker removal, radio station stamp, a piece of clear tape at the opening, and is bent a bit at the corners. Label has an ink stamp.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Keith Jarrett

Mysteries
Impulse, 1976. Near Mint-
Dark and moody work from Keith Jarrett – a record that builds strongly off his ensemble feeling of the Impulse years, but which also seems to carry a bit more of the introspective vibe he was building up in some of his more stripped down solo recordings! The group's still a great one here ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse/ABC, Mid 60s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set of Mingus' work for Impulse, with a fair complement of stuff that he did for the label – including the entire LP's worth of material from Black Saint & The Sinner Lady (which is always his toughest to find). This is a nice cheaply priced way to get that LP, and to get some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

Live At Pep's
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by the mighty Yusef Lateef – and that's really saying a lot, given his fantastic legacy of albums! The set's a live one, which is a bit unusual in Lateef's catalog at this time – and the concert setting is perhaps a window onto some of his more ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent work from the glory days of Impulse Records – tracks from sessions for the label's most famous albums, but never issued until this special package! We're not normally ones to dig various artists collections in jazz, but this series is wonderful – an essential counterpart to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Crusaders

Free As The Wind
ABC/Blue Thumb, 1977. Sealed
The Crusaders are really going strong at this point – in near-hit status, almost acting as the Steely Dan of LA jazz. The sound is certainly slicker than before, but in a way that's actually pretty darn nice – as Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, and Larry Carlton come together ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1956. Very Good+
One of Jimmy Raney's greatest albums – and a hard swinging set that features some wonderful interplay between his guitar and the valve trombone of Bob Brookmeyer! Piano is handled by either Hank Jones or Dick Katz – and the group has a lively edge that's reminiscent of Raney's earlier ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico O'Farrill

Nine Flags
Impulse, 1966. Sealed Gatefold
Very groovy work from Chico – still very Latin at the core, but with lots of light 60s touches on top, ala the work of Gary McFarland, or some of the other groove-conscious arrangers for Verve and Impulse! Players on the set include Art Farmer, Clark Terry, JJ Johnson, Seldon Powell, and Pat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

Great Scott!! (Impulse)
Impulse, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
Swinging organ tracks from Shirley, with large band backing by Oliver Nelson, very much in the mode of Jimmy Smith's albums with Nelson on Verve! Includes a nice reading of the theme from "Shot In The Dark", plus "Hoe Down", "Shadows Of Paris", and "Great ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Sun Ship
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! The record's got the group really pushing forward strongly – hitting a Love Supreme mode, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1966. Sealed Gatefold
John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! The album's a great counterpart to the first Vanguard session – as it takes all of the bold, soaring energy of that date, and balances it with the newly introspective ... LP, Vinyl record album

Von Freeman

Serenade & Blues
Nessa, 1979. Near Mint-
Right from the very first note, you'll know you're in for something special here – the unusual phrasing and open-hearted qualities that made Von Freeman one of the true Chicago legends on the tenor saxophone – even though he never got the global fame of contemporaries like Clifford ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Naked
DIW (Japan), 1986. Very Good+
The start of a beautiful relationship between the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the DIW label – a Japanese imprint who brought the group back to full prominence in the years after they stopped recording for ECM! DIW also let the group really do their own thing, too – almost moving back ... LP, Vinyl record album
