Sweet Apple

LP (Item 34426) Columbia, Early 70s — Condition: Sealed

A bit funk, a bit rock, and a bit soul – Sweet Apple proudly followed in the tradition of similar Columbia acts like Sly & The Family Stone or The Chambers Brothers, although they never lasted long enough to get the fame of either of those groups. Most tracks have vocals, which are alright, but the real strength of the band lies in their instrumental ability – which is nice and funky on the best cuts, especially those with more instrumental moments. These include "Fonky McGregor" and "Sweet Apple Jam", both nice groovers with a messed-up funk sound. Other tracks include "I Can't Find My Way", "Sweet Apple", "Silly People", and "Power Of A Man".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Boz Scaggs

Silk Degrees
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
Blue-eyed soul from Boz Scaggs, with a decidedly Philly influenced sound to the production, which we'd hazard a guess comes more from the Hall & Oates side of town than the Sigma Sound axis. Still, this is a solid album with the irresistible hit "Lowdown", still a favorite around ... LP, Vinyl record album

Boz Scaggs

Moments
Columbia, 1970. Near Mint-
If you think you know Boz Scaggs, think again – because this early Columbia album features a whole different sound! The Scaggs here is a really loose and soulful one – as Boz steps out of the freewheeling late 60s Bay Area scene with a really wonderful take on blue-eyed soul – an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maurice White

Maurice White
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint-
The only solo album ever recorded by Maurice White – an upbeat and soulful set that's right up there with his best 80s work in Earth Wind & Fire! Like that group at the time, White's hitting a rhythmic side that's more electronic at points – letting beats and keyboard bits stand in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Deniece Williams

Hot On The Trail
Columbia, 1986. Near Mint-
Deniece Williams is hot on the trail of an 80s groove here – working with lots of tight keyboards and contemporary rhythms, yet still staying true to that amazing vocal approach she first worked out in the Chicago scene of the 60s! The style is a great mix of crossover soul and deeper lines ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Withers

Menagerie
Columbia, 1977. Near Mint-
One of Bill Withers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that has hip stepping off the acoustic sound of his Sussex records, into a warm and jazzy style that we like every bit as much as his earlier work! The album's got a wonderfully sophisticated jazzy vibe, and includes the excellent cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

I'm So Proud
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint-
There's plenty to be proud of here – as the album's a key part in the reinvention of Deniece Williams for the 80s – a great way of finding a new setting for her wonderful voice, one that helped her reach a huge new audience in the process! Most of the backings have an 80s approach, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

J Blackfoot

U Turn
Edge, Early 80s. Sealed
Not as strong as some of Blackfoot's other solo work – a mix of styles that has his roots in the Memphis scene getting a bit of an 80s production touch, sometimes a bit too tinny to sound great, at others rolling into more comfortable territory with a warmer feel. Homer Banks wrote and ... LP, Vinyl record album

J Blackfoot

Physical Attraction
Sound Town, 1984. Sealed
A really nice little album from J Blackfoot – one that's recorded with a few 80s touches, but in a way that mostly preserves the sweetly crackling style that makes his vocals so wonderful! There's plenty of mellower tunes here that echo with the rich contribution that Blackfoot brought to ... LP, Vinyl record album
