Love Keys

LP (Item 33530) Atlantic, 1981 — Condition: Sealed

An overlooked solo gem from Eddie Kendricks – recorded at a time when he was years past his solo Motown fame, but still burning strong on Atlantic Records! The set was recorded down in Alabama, and gives Eddie a slightly different setting – one that unlocks some really rich aspects of his vocals, but also keeps things in a mature, modern mode as well! The Controllers provide vocal support, and the Muscle Shoals Horns add in some musical flourishes as well – but Kendricks is still the main charm of the album, as his vocals crackle wonderfully on well-penned tunes by 70s soul maestros like Lou Courtney, Ronn Mattlock, and the team of Holland Dozier Holland. There's a new groove that's a real shift from the boogie of Eddie's 70s albums – a nice groove that sounds especially great on the midtempo numbers. Titles include "Looking For Love", "I'm In Need Of Love", "I Don't Need Nobody Else", "I Need Your Lovin", and "In Love We're One".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed original pressing! Cover has a small cutout mark.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eddie Kendricks

Vintage 78
Arista, 1978. Very Good+
Eddie Kendricks, vintage 1978 – and still very much in the great grooving mode he brought to his earlier solo material for Motown! Even in this giant dancefloor generation, Eddie's got something very special and unique – a voice that can still sound as heartbreaking on a groover as it ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Kendricks

Slick
Tamla/Motown, 1977. Sealed
Smooth mellow grooves, in the style that Eddie pioneered, and which he still did better than most. The album's a great batch of tracks with production by Leonard Caston, who also produced some of Eddie's earlier works, and the set's pretty darn great all the way through. With the cuts "Someth ... Eddie Kendricks

Something More
Arista, 1979. Near Mint-
A stunner of a solo album from Eddie Kendricks – a set that has the singer stepping quite far from Motown, and working with east coast indie soul wizard Patrick Adams – a genius on both the albums groovers and ballads! Despite the late 70s date of the record, the vibe here is more like ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good
A key moment in the career of Esther Phillips – and a record that really has her shaking off the rougher bluesy styles of the earlier years, and pointing the way towards strong jazz success in the 70s! The album's definitely burnin, but with a sophisticated vibe too – as Esther works ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prince Phillip Mitchell

Top Of The Line
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good
A classic set of smooth 70s soul from an under-recognized genius! Phillip Mitchell is a bit like his Atlantic Records contemporary Sam Dees – in that he wrote a lot of material for other singers, recorded a handful of singles, and worked mostly in the southern scene – but he also had a ... Average White Band

Feel No Fret
Atlantic, 1979. Sealed Gatefold
A great one that showcases the group's best second suit – their smooth compressed late 70s soul sound – a great evolution of their earlier groove, and one that showed them as a great mainstream soul act! The tunes are a bit mellower overall, but still have a lot of crackle and warmth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway

Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
An amazing record from the team of Flack & Hathaway – one of the hippest duos in soul! Individually, each had taken the music to new heights and new audiences, through the use of jazzy phrasing and sophisticated lyrics, while never selling out in the way that earlier pop soul acts had ... Steve Arrington

Dancin In The Key Of Life
Atlantic, 1985. Sealed
Post-Slave, post-Hall Of Fame – but Steve Arrington's still going strong, and really working that 80s groove that he helped invent back in the day! Tracks are leaner and simpler than you'd expect – not a lot of nonsense, and a good focus on rhythmically catchy numbers. Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atco/Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the coolest, funkiest records we've ever heard from Dr John – thanks to lots of guest help from The Meters! The vibe here is a bit tighter than some of Mac's previous records – not as trippy as his first few for Atco – but the sound is still nice and sharp, and Allen ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1977. Near Mint-
A sweet 70s classic from Roberta Flack – recorded with a mellow jazzy undercurrent that really fits the spirit of the title! Chic

C'est Chic
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout!
