Best Of Ramsey Lewis (Cadet)

LP (Item 33527) Cadet, Mid 60s — Condition: Very Good-
A collection of Ramsey's work on Cadet/Argo that focuses mostly on the groovy uptempo tracks from the mid 60s – when Lewis had cracked the pop instrumental charts with soulful versions of bigger hits. Titles include "The In Crowd", "Function At The Junction", "Soul Man", "Up Tight", "Hang On Sloopy", and "Dancing In The Street". Also includes 3 excellent cuts from the Charles Stepney baroque soul years – "Les Fleur", "Julia", and "Maiden Voyage".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue fade label stereo pressing. Cover has ring wear, aging.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Argo, 1961. Very Good
In case you think the folks at Chess were putting too fine a point on the earthy origins of Ramsey's jazz, the title's actually one that follows from an earlier album Ramsey cut for Mercury – and features a similar cover of a shovel digging in the dirt! The tracks are a great blend of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Movie Album
Cadet, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1964. Very Good
A killer live set from Ramsey Lewis and his classic early 60s trio – a record that's not nearly as well known as The In Crowd, but every bit as great! Drummer Red Holt and bassist Eldee Young really get in some great elements here – working with Ramsey's piano in a groove that's far ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Wade In The Water
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Classic pop soul jazz from the inventor of the genre! Ramsey's funky piano is backed by some soulful arrangements handled by Richard Evans – in a really tight style that includes great percussion, electric bass, and an all-out kicking style that makes even the mellowest tunes groove! Evans ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don't It Feel Good
Columbia, 1975. Sealed
Massive keyboard work from the great Ramsey Lewis – easily one of his best records ever, thanks to some spaciously funky production by Charles Stepney! Stepney plays keyboards here along with Ramsey, and the twin-keys approach makes for a sound that's extra-special – one that sums up ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Goin' Latin
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
Goin Latin, and goin groovy too – thanks to some wonderful arrangements from Chicago soul legend Richard Evans – who really helps Ramsey Lewis open up his sound on the set! The format's less straight Latin than you might expect from the title – and Evans brings in a bouncing, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Sun Goddess
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the ... LP, Vinyl record album

King Fleming Trio

Weary Traveler
Cadet, 1965. Very Good-
One of three rare Chess Records sessions recorded by Chicago pianist King Fleming – a great player who was part of the same big generation and Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal – and was supposedly a big influence on the latter! Every one of Fleming's records are a bit different – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Burrell

Tender Gender
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Straight, strong, and soulful sounds from guitarist Kenny Burrell – quite possibly one of his best albums of the 60s, thanks to a really well-focused sound throughout! The groove here is nice and tight – a cooking little rhythm section that features Richard Wyands on piano, Martin ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Klemmer

Involvement
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
Beautiful early work from John Klemmer – one of the most under-rated talents of his generation, and a great player who frequently gets overlooked because of his later, smoother work. This album is Klemmer's first – recorded with a soulful Chicago tenor sound, touched with some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bunky Green

Playin' For Keeps
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Tremendous work from an alto player with a very unique conception – a player who was unlike Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, or some of his precursors on the instrument – and instead really took off in bold new directions, like Lou Donaldson or fellow Chicagoan Sonny Cox in the mid 60s! ... Kenny Burrell

Ode To 52nd Street
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A really wonderful Chess/Cadet session from the 60s – not the bop-styled record you might expect from the 52nd Street reference in the title! Instead, the whole thing's more of a cool Chicago take on soul jazz – with these great large arrangements from Richard Evans, backing strong ... LP, Vinyl record album
