Best Of Ramsey Lewis (Cadet)

LP (Item 33527) Cadet, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
A collection of Ramsey's work on Cadet/Argo that focuses mostly on the groovy uptempo tracks from the mid 60s – when Lewis had cracked the pop instrumental charts with soulful versions of bigger hits. Titles include "The In Crowd", "Function At The Junction", "Soul Man", "Up Tight", "Hang On Sloopy", and "Dancing In The Street". Also includes 3 excellent cuts from the Charles Stepney baroque soul years – "Les Fleur", "Julia", and "Maiden Voyage".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue fade label stereo pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Barefoot Sunday Blues
Argo, 1963. Very Good
One of the strongest early albums by the Ramsey Lewis Trio – especially because it features some great original material! Percussion Discussion (Tough/Max)
Chess/Cadet/Argo, 1957/1958. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A 70s issue of 2 late 50s hard bop sides released by Argo and Cadet. Though the title and packaging might lead you to believe Max and Art are performing side by side, it's really just two albums slapped together, and not necessarily inappropriately, in a gatefold sleeve to sell easily. The first ... LP, Vinyl record album

Woody Herman

Heavy Exposure
Cadet, 1969. Very Good+
Excellent stuff – a record that we love it to death, and listen to all the time! Ray Bryant

Slow Freight
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
A killer album by soul jazz pianist Ray Bryant! The title track, "Slow Freight", is an amazing 10 minute groover that moves at a very slow pace (just like a freight train), and which features some very cool ad-lib talking by Paul Serrano – a pretty groovy touch that really adds a ... Bunky Green

Playin' For Keeps
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Tremendous work from an alto player with a very unique conception – a player who was unlike Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, or some of his precursors on the instrument – and instead really took off in bold new directions, like Lou Donaldson or fellow Chicagoan Sonny Cox in the mid 60s! ... Reuben Wilson & The Cost Of Living

Got To Get Your Own
Cadet, 1975. Very Good+
Monster funk from Hammond hero Reuben Wilson – an album of hard-burning, bad-walking tunes that are a fair bit different than most of his other work!
