Halleloo Y'All

LP (Item 33474) Prestige, 1963 — Condition: Very Good-
Red's usual trio bag is given a bit of a soul jazz twist (or perhaps we should say "a bit more of a soul jazz twist" since Red's always pretty darn soulful!) – in this set of tracks that has a slight gospel piano sound to it, and which also features Red playing organ on one track! Red's not the greatest talent on the instrument, but we always like the chance to hear a pianist hitting the Hammond – and with backing by Sam Jones and Art Taylor, he does the job pretty nicely. Titles include "Back Slidin", "Revelation Blues", "I'll Never Be Free", and "Everytime I Feel The Spirit".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Silver & black label NJ pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Cover looks nice.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great 2LP set that reissues two of the best blowing sessions on Prestige from the late 50s – All Day Long and All Night Long – proof that Kenny Burrell could hit a nice groove when he wanted to! The tracks are all long and very open-ended, with players that include Mal Waldron, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1954/1956. Very Good-
A strange mix of material – but some great work overall! Prestige/New Jazz, Late 50s. Very Good
Fantastic early work from Gil Evans – emerging here in this early session as an already far-thinking modernist. The tracks are shorter and less ambitious than some of Evans' work on Impulse, but the group is excellent – and even in a shorter format, the conception of the work still ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1966. Very Good+
Wonderful early work from reedman Eric Kloss – looking mighty sharp on the cover, but in a different way than on his 70s albums! The sound here is right in the same pocket as work by some of the best soul jazz artists on Prestige at the time – no surprise, as the set features Hammond ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis All Stars

Walkin'
Prestige, 1954. Very Good+
As classic an early album by Miles Davis as you can find – truly filled with the "all star" players billed in the title, and a session that has the sharpness of Davis' bop work for Blue Note, yet also lets him stretch out in a slightly more relaxed format! The album features Miles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eric Dolphy

Far Cry (2nd cover)
Prestige, 1960. Near Mint-
Eric Dolphy's first meeting in the studio with trumpeter Booker Little – a brilliant batch of modernism that's easily one of the hippest records Little ever worked on! The Dolphy heard here is Eric at his most inventive – sharp-edged and angular one minute, then spiritually lyrical the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
A beautiful album that more than lives up to its evocative title – an early session from John Coltrane, filled with long tracks that slide along brilliantly! Gene Ammons

Boss Tenor
Prestige, 1960. Very Good-
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

We Free Kings
Mercury, 1961. Very Good
A hell of a record from the young Roland Kirk – one of his first for Mercury Records, and the start of a great run of genius in the 60s! Kirk is mindblowing here – playing tenor, flute, manzello, and stritch – often at the same time, as pictured on the cover – a mode that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

House Party
Blue Note, 1958. Good
One of the best hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note!
