❔

AWB's first for Atlantic – and a nice slice of funk that proves that they can mix it up with the best groups of the 70s! The record's got plenty of sweet electric keyboards over smooth funky basslines – and as the years go by, the band's white boy vocals don't sound nearly as bad as we remember them. And besides, when they play their instruments so nicely – how can you hold the singing against them? Includes the killer classic "Pick Up The Pieces", sampled more times than we can remember – plus "You Got It", "Just Wanna Love You Tonight", "Person To Person", and a nice remake of the Isley Brothers' "Work To Do".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tower Of Power

East Bay Grease
San Francisco/Atlantic, 1970. Very Good+
One of the first albums from Tower Of Power – and one of the funkiest, too – a set that really has the group working in a loose, spontaneous mode that's totally great – steeped in all the best elements of southern soul, but forged with a new sort of energy in the Bay Area scene at ... Jerry Carr

This Must Be Heaven
Cherie/Atlantic, 1981. Near Mint-
Mellow modern soul from the early 80s, released by the Atlantic sub-label Cherie, and recorded by Jerry Carr with a nice smooth sound. The title track, "This Must Be Heaven", is the strong one here, but the record has some other pleasing moments, including "Stay With me" and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Aretha's Greatest Hits
Atlantic, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A well-done showcase of Aretha's best early work for Atlantic Records – a collection that really gets at the deepest soul side of her style, and focuses on the transformation of sound that occurred when Franklin moved over to the label from Columbia. The set's overflowing with greatness ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gino Soccio

Face To Face
RFC/Atlantic, 1982. Near Mint-
Sweet electric club from Gino Soccio – fairly pop at most points, but still with a hip enough RFC label twist! Gino plays keyboards, sings, and did pretty much everything else – and he's got a good talent for a simple snapping groove that never goes too far over the top. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barbara Lewis

Best Of Barbara Lewis
Atlantic, Mid 60s/1971. Very Good+
Some of the best non-Motown soul to ever come out of Detroit, and a brilliant example of the uptown soul sound of the 60's! Nearly every track's a winner, and this comp of Barbara's best 60's stuff includes lots of classics like "Baby, I'm Yours", "Hello Stranger", "Stop ... LP, Vinyl record album

First Take
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good-
What can we say? We've heard this one a million times, it sold over a million copies – but it's still incredible! Roberta Flack

Quiet Fire
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good
Great small combo work by Roberta Flack, recorded early in her career, when she was still one of the hippest things around – and it's among her best records! Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint-

Spinners

Spinners
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good
A landmark album from The Spinners – one that has the Detroit vocal group making a hip trip to the Philly scene – picking up a whole new sound and rich new energy in the process! Esther Phillips

Esther
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint-
Given her start as a rough-hewn child junkie R&B singer, it's hard to believe that Esther's the one singing these beautiful ballads and soul tracks! The album's fantastic, though – and it shows Esther maturing into one of the more fantastic vocalists of her generation. Oliver Nelson, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Payback
Polydor, 1973. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s!
