Big Band Bossa Nova

LP (Item 3306) Verve, 1962 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
An overlooked gem from the Verve bossa years – a session that features the sweet tenor sax work of Stan Getz, alongside some swinging bossa arrangements from the great Gary McFarland! Given the strength of Gary's own work for Verve at the time, it's no surprise that he's a perfect accompanist for Getz on the session – working with just the right amount of space to let Stan stand out from the pack, and really creating a great blend of Brazilian rhythms and some of the modder 60s styles at Verve. Gary contributed a number of originals to the session too – and titles include "Bim Bom", "Manlancolico", "Balanco No Samba", "Noite Triste", "Chega De Saudade", and "Manha De Carnival".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1957. Near Mint-
A great little session – and a meeting that was one of the best things to happen to the Oscar Peterson trio during the 50s! Stan's tone fits perfectly with the group here – and his playing next to the guitar of Herb Ellis recalls many of the fine strengths of the early 50s Getz sides ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Pure Getz
Concord, 1982. Near Mint-
One of Stan's great early Concord albums – a surprisingly great period for his playing! The group here features James McNeely on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and either Victor Lewis or Billy Hart on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Dolphin
Concord, 1981. Near Mint-
One of the best later moments from the great Stan Getz – a set we might even place on the same level as his 60s work for Verve – and certainly at the same par as his records in the 70s for Columbia! Yet this set is quite different than that latter batch – as it has Getz really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Clef, Early 50s. Very Good
Stunning early work from Stan Getz – the kind of simple but breathtaking sides that he cut before any of his later fame – in a mode that made him one of the most inventive talents on the tenor sax! Stan's caught here right past the first flurry of initial time in the studio – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Roost, Early 50s. Very Good
Beautiful early bop material by Getz – recorded at Storyville with a crack little combo that includes Al Haig on piano and Jimmy Raney on guitar. The Raney/Getz sound is a great one – with Raney's jangly guitar notes providing a nice edge for Getz's smoother alto. Titles include " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dynasty
Verve, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great lost album from Stan Getz! The record features Stan in a totally new setting, playing with some relatively unfamiliar French talents – Eddie Louiss on organ, Rene Thomas on guitar, and Bernard Lubat on drums. Louiss is incredible, and has a free spacey sound that recalls Larry Young ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful bit of lost Getz from the 60s – a record of incredible depth that's somehow gotten lost in the shuffle of time! The album has Stan playing at Tanglewood with a core group that includes Gary Burton, Jim Hall, Steve Swallow, and Roy Haynes, plus musical backings by the Boston Pops ... LP, Vinyl record album

A rare treat – 2LPs worth of material by Johnny Hodges, recorded at the end of the 50s, but never issued until this late 70s set! The first disc features a 1959 session, with players that include Harold Baker, Quentin Jackson, Ben Webster, Jimmy Hamilton, and Jo Jones – accompanying ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chet Baker

Blood Chet & Tears
Verve, 1970. Near Mint-
One of the most unusual albums in the career of trumpet legend Chet Baker – done at a time when he was definitely going through some changes in his life, which also led to some changes in his music too! This set's not unlike a similar date that Stan Getz did for Verve around the same time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Concert Jazz Band
Verve, 1960. Very Good+
Great large group material from Gerry Mulligan – and a record that definitely defines the sound of his famous Concert Jazz Band of the early 60s! The group features a four part sax section – headed by Mulligan, with other players that include Zoot Sims on tenor, Gene Allen on baritone, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Sealed
Cole Porter's tunes are great enough on their own, but Oscar really opens them up on this set – picking up the inherent rhythms in the numbers and really working them over – in a way that makes the outing one of the most lively in Peterson's songbook series for Verve! Oscar's fluid ... LP, Vinyl record album
