Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

❔

Ha! This one really takes us back! The set was a massive breakthrough for August Darnell – one of his biggest hits since his day with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, with an equally appealing approach to the dancefloor. Tracks mix early 80s New York club styles with Darnell's mad retro/exotic take on the world – coming out with a sound that's slightly hokey, but equally catchy! Includes the hits "Annie (I'm Not Your Daddy)", "I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby", and "Stool Pigeon" – plus the cuts "Imitation", "I'm Corrupt", "No Fish Today", and "Loving You Made A Fool Out Of Me".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kid Creole & The Coconuts

In Praise Of Older Women & Other Crimes
Sire, 1985. Near Mint-
Later work by the one-and-only Kid Creole & The Coconuts – past his prime, but armed with the silly, and still very enjoyable hit "Endicott" – and other nice moments! The sound is cleaner and more streamlined by this point, namely the mid 80s – but the lively horns, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Notations

Notations
Gemigo, 1975. Near Mint-
The one and only album released by this great Chicago vocal group – a sublime harmony outfit who'd recorded some excellent indie 45s before getting the chance to do this one-off set for Curtis Mayfield's Gemigo label! The style of the set is a bit more polished than some of the group's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bar-Kays

Black Rock
Volt, 1971. Near Mint-
An album that's every bit as great as the title might imply – heavy guitar-based funk from the second version of The Bar-Kays – one that uses the new instrumental focus to push a groove that's much more black rock than before! There's still a bit of trumpet from the past, but the sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Meters

Trick Bag
Reprise, 1976. Near Mint-
A sweet Cali set from The Meters – one that loses a bit of their rougher roots, yet still holds onto plenty of funk at the same time! By the mid 70s, the New Orleans soul sound had broken out of the underground, was residing happily in mainstream LA. Allen Toussaint already produced a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Force MDs

Love Letters
Tommy Boy, 1984. Near Mint-
Sweet electro soul from Force MDs – an early album for Tommy Boy that helped set the scene for a countless imitations to come! The record features a unique blend of older harmony soul (clearly referenced by the old school sweaters on the cover) and (then) current electro production – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Henderson

Solid
Buddah, 1976. Very Good
The very first album from Michael Henderson – but a set that already finds him very much at the top of his game – thanks to previous work with Miles Davis and Norman Connors! Both artists gave Henderson a chance to do different things with his music, and by the time of this record, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Syreeta

Syreeta
MoWest, 1972. Near Mint-
One of our favorite soul records of the 70s – and one of the most unique albums ever cut by Motown, too! The lovely Syreeta steps out here with key studio help from then-partner Stevie Wonder – who makes things even more righteous and more cosmic than on any of his own 70s material ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hesitations

New Born Free
Kapp, 1968. Near Mint-
A landmark record from one of the greatest underground vocal groups of the 60s! The Hesitations take the theme to "Born Free", and through some magical soul, turn it into a Civil Rights-era anthem of freedom and pride. The rest of the record is equally great – with a good mixture ... LP, Vinyl record album

Banks & Hampton

Passport To Ecstasy
Warner, 1977. Near Mint-
Modern soul, but with a bit of a southern twist – a sweet set recorded in Muscle Shoals by the team of Homer Banks and Carl Hampton – and produced by Brad Shapiro with all the great mix of modes he was bringing to records with Millie Jackson and others! The album's got a nice sort of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sylvers

Sylvers
Pride, 1972. Near Mint-
The first album by The Sylvers – a soulful band made up of youngsters from the Los Angeles scene, but who had a lot more going on than some of the other kiddie-soul bands of the early 70s! The group's a sextet at this point, with four male voices and two female ones – coming across as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerome Richardson

Groove Merchant
Verve, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A great little album of jazzy tracks from multi-talented reedman Jerome Richardson! The album's got a sort of jazzy meets Now Sound sound – sort of like the Benny Golson or Cal Tjader albums on Verve from the time, and it's a great one if you dig that sort of thing. The tracks are mostly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Woody Herman

Moody Woody
Everest, 1959. Very Good+
Woody Herman plays Ralph Burns' 4 part suite "Summer Sequence" with his orchestra and Charlie Byrd soloing on guitar. There's also a few other shorter tracks, like "Bamba Samba" and "Prelude Ala Cha Cha" with a lighter feel, but as the title says, it's pretty moody ... LP, Vinyl record album
